Discovering Assam in November 2023

  1. Day 1: Kamakhya Temple
    15 minutes (3.2km) from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport

    Start your day with a visit to the Kamakhya Temple, one of the most significant Hindu pilgrimage sites dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya. Explore the temple complex, marvel at the intricate architecture and witness the morning aarti. In the afternoon, head to Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra to learn about Assam's culture, history and art. In the evening, go to the Guwahati Planetarium to witness an awe-inspiring sky show.

  2. Day 2: Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary
    2 hours 20 minutes (54.6km) from Guwahati

    Embark on a wildlife safari at the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros. Spot various species of birds, reptiles and mammals, including tigers, leopards and wild boars. In the afternoon, visit the Mayong Central Museum and Emporium to explore the world of magic, witchcraft and mythology. Spend the evening at the Brahmaputra Riverfront, enjoying a beautiful sunset view and savouring some local delicacies.

  3. Day 3: Kaziranga National Park
    3 hours 40 minutes (209km) from Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

    Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kaziranga National Park, home to two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinoceros population. Go on an elephant safari or a jeep safari to spot the various species of flora and fauna that call this park home. In the afternoon, head to the Kakochang Waterfalls to enjoy the scenic beauty of the waterfall. Spend the evening experiencing the traditional Assamese culture and trying the local cuisine at the Assam State Museum.

  4. Day 4: Majuli Island
    5 hours 30 minutes (270km) from Kaziranga National Park

    Take a ferry ride to the Majuli Island, the world's largest river island and a cultural hub of Assam. Visit the various satras or monasteries, witness the traditional mask-making or pottery-making, and enjoy the beautiful sunset over the Brahmaputra River. In the afternoon, explore the Auniati Satra, known for its extensive collection of ancient Assamese artefacts. End your day with a relaxing boat ride on the Brahmaputra River.

  5. Day 5: Hajo
    2 hours 10 minutes (93km) from Majuli Island

    Visit Hajo, a pilgrimage site for Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists alike. Explore the Hayagriva Madhava Temple, the Powa Mecca Mosque and the Kedareswara Temple. In the afternoon, head to the Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biosphere reserve, home to Bengal tigers, Indian rhinoceroses and Asian elephants. Spend the evening at the Saraighat Bridge, enjoying the beautiful view of the Brahmaputra River and the musical fountain show.

Recommendations

If you have some extra time, you can visit the Tawang Monastery, the largest monastery in India, or the Shillong Peak, the highest point in Shillong, Meghalaya. You can also take a side trip to the Dawki River, known for its crystal-clear waters and the living root bridge. To maximise your fun, try the Assamese thali, the traditional Assamese meal, or visit the local markets to buy some traditional handicrafts and souvenirs. Don't forget to experience the traditional Assamese dance, Bihu.
