Puna Family-Friendly Itinerary for May 2024

  1. Day 1: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
    35 minutes (28 miles) from Hilo International Airport

    In the morning, explore the Kilauea Visitor Centre and learn about the volcanoes, then head to the Jaggar Museum to witness the Halema'uma'u Crater. After lunch, drive to Chain of Craters Road and see the Mauna Ulu lava flow and the Holei Sea Arch. In the evening, take a guided tour of the Thurston Lava Tube.

  2. Day 2: Akaka Falls State Park
    50 minutes (24 miles) from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

    Spend the morning hiking around Akaka Falls State Park, marveling at the 442-foot Akaka Falls. After lunch, head towards the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden and explore the lush flora while walking the trails. In the evening, enjoy a sunset dinner cruise from Hilo Bay.

  3. Day 3: Liliuokalani Gardens and Wailoa River State Park
    20 minutes (11 miles) from Akaka Falls State Park

    In the morning, visit the serene Liliuokalani Gardens, a beautiful Japanese-style garden that offers views of Hilo Bay. After lunch, head to Wailoa River State Park and see the iconic King Kamehameha statue. Take a leisurely stroll around the park, and then drive to Richardsons Beach Park to spend the evening relaxing on the black sand beach.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens or the Mokupapapa Discovery Center. A side trip to Mauna Kea is also worth it for stargazing.
