Armenia: A Family-Friendly Itinerary for June 2023

  1. Day 1: Yerevan Cascade Complex
    15 minutes (3.2 km) from Zvartnots International Airport

    In the morning, explore the beautiful Yerevan Cascade Complex, a giant stairway made of limestone that features stunning gardens, fountains, and sculptures. In the afternoon, visit the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, which is located within the complex and features contemporary art exhibitions. In the evening, enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the Mount Ararat at the top of the staircase.

  2. Day 2: Geghard Monastery Complex
    1 hour 10 minutes (40 km) from Yerevan Cascade Complex

    In the morning, head to the Geghard Monastery Complex, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful places in Armenia. It is a medieval monastery that is partially carved out of a mountain and features gorgeous stone carvings and frescoes. In the afternoon, have a picnic at the Garni Temple, which is located nearby and is the only pagan temple that has survived in Armenia. In the evening, return to Yerevan and have dinner at a traditional Armenian restaurant.

  3. Day 3: Lake Sevan
    1 hour 30 minutes (66 km) from Geghard Monastery Complex

    In the morning, visit the beautiful Lake Sevan, which is the largest lake in Armenia and one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world. There are many activities to do here, such as swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking. In the afternoon, visit the Sevanavank Monastery, which is located on a hill overlooking the lake and features stunning views. In the evening, enjoy a sunset over the lake and have a barbecue on the shore.

  4. Day 4: Dilijan National Park
    1 hour 50 minutes (100 km) from Lake Sevan

    In the morning, visit the Dilijan National Park, which is a beautiful forested area that is home to many endangered species of flora and fauna. There are many hiking trails here, as well as natural hot springs. In the afternoon, visit the Haghartsin Monastery, which is a medieval monastery that is located within the park and features stunning architecture. In the evening, relax in a traditional Armenian guesthouse and enjoy local cuisine.

  5. Day 5: Tatev Monastery
    4 hours 30 minutes (330 km) from Dilijan National Park

    In the morning, take a road trip to the Tatev Monastery, which is a medieval Armenian monastery that is located on a plateau overlooking the Vorotan Gorge. It is accessible by the longest reversible aerial tramway in the world, the Wings of Tatev, which also offers stunning views of the landscape. In the afternoon, visit the Shaki Waterfall, which is located nearby and is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Armenia. In the evening, return to your accommodation and relax.

  6. Day 6: Echmiadzin Cathedral
    4 hours (290 km) from Tatev Monastery

    In the morning, visit the Echmiadzin Cathedral, which is the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church and is located in the city of Vagharshapat. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features stunning architecture and religious artifacts. In the afternoon, visit the Zvartnots Cathedral, which is a ruined 7th-century cathedral that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the evening, return to Yerevan and have a farewell dinner at a fancy restaurant.

Recommendations

If you have more time, consider visiting the Noravank Monastery, the Khor Virap Monastery, and the Jermuk Waterfall. You can also take a side trip to the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, which is a disputed territory that is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but is de facto independent. To maximize your fun, try traditional Armenian dishes such as dolma, khorovats, and lavash, and attend an Armenian folk music or dance performance.
