Exploring North East India in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Guwahati
    1 hour 45 minutes (20 miles) from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport

    Start your day in Guwahati with a visit to the Kamakhya Temple, a famous Shakti Peetha. Explore the temple and learn about its history and religious significance. In the afternoon, head to the Umananda Temple, located on an island in the middle of the Brahmaputra River. Take a boat ride to the island and enjoy the scenic views. End your day with a visit to the Assam State Museum, which showcases the history and culture of the state.

  2. Day 2: Shillong
    2 hours 40 minutes (68 miles) from Guwahati

    Start your day by exploring the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, one of the largest churches in the region. Afterwards, visit the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures to learn about the diverse cultures and traditions of the North East. End your day with a visit to the Seven Sisters Falls, a group of seven waterfalls that cascade down the cliffs.

  4. Day 4: Kaziranga National Park
    5 hours 30 minutes (160 miles) from Cherapunjee

    Start your day early and head to the Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the one-horned rhinoceros. Take a jeep safari and spot other wildlife such as elephants, tigers, and wild buffaloes. In the afternoon, visit the nearby tea estates and learn about the tea making process. End your day by relaxing in one of the many resorts located near the park.

While in Guwahati, don't miss the opportunity to take a sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra River. You can also visit Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to the highest density of one-horned rhinoceros in the world. If you have extra time, consider visiting Tawang, a beautiful town in Arunachal Pradesh known for its monasteries and scenic views. Lastly, make sure to try the local cuisine, which includes dishes such as bamboo shoot pickle, smoked meat, and fish curries.
