One Day Itinerary for Wayanadu in June 2023

  1. 9:00AM: Edakkal Caves
    Located 25 minutes (8.2 miles) from Sulthan Bathery

    Start your day with a visit to the Edakkal Caves which are two natural caves situated in a remote location in the Western Ghats. The caves are famous for their ancient rock engravings and are believed to date back to the Neolithic era.

  2. 11:00AM: Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary
    Located 45 minutes (18.6 miles) from Edakkal Caves

    Experience wildlife in their natural habitat at the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to a diverse range of animals including elephants, tigers, leopards, and deer. You can opt for a jeep safari or a guided trekking tour to explore the sanctuary.

  3. 1:00PM: Lunch at ClayHut A Village Restaurant
    Located 35 minutes (14.2 miles) from Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary

    Enjoy a traditional Kerala meal at ClayHut A Village Restaurant which is a unique restaurant made entirely out of clay. They offer a variety of dishes including fish curry, appam, and biryani.

  4. 3:00PM: Chembra Peak
    Located 55 minutes (22.1 miles) from ClayHut A Village Restaurant

    Take a trek to the Chembra Peak which is the highest peak in Wayanadu. The trek is a bit strenuous but the views from the top are absolutely breathtaking. You will also come across a heart-shaped lake on your way up.

  5. 6:00PM: Banasura Sagar Dam
    Located 30 minutes (12.6 miles) from Chembra Peak

    End your day with a visit to the Banasura Sagar Dam which is the largest earthen dam in India. The dam is surrounded by lush greenery and offers a beautiful view of the sunset. You can also opt for a speedboat ride on the dam.

Recommendations

If you have time, you can also visit the Wayanad Heritage Museum and the Pookode Lake. For a side trip, you can head to the nearby town of Kalpetta which is famous for its coffee plantations. To maximize your fun, make sure to carry comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Lastly, don't forget to try out some of the local delicacies like the bamboo rice and the Wayanad pepper chicken.
