4-Day Nature Itinerary for Nainital in September 2023

  1. Day 1: Naini Lake
    Located in the heart of Nainital
    Time & Distance: 10 minutes (1.5 km) from Tallital Bus Station

    In the morning, take a leisurely walk along the lake and enjoy the scenic views of the surrounding hills. You can rent a paddleboat and explore the lake on your own. In the afternoon, visit the Naina Devi Temple, located on the northern shore of the lake. In the evening, enjoy a delicious meal at one of the many restaurants near the lake.

  2. Day 2: Eco Cave Gardens
    Located in Sukhatal
    Time & Distance: 20 minutes (3.3 km) from Naini Lake

    In the morning, head to the Eco Cave Gardens and explore the six interconnected caves that simulate the habitats of various animals. In the afternoon, visit the Himalayan Darshan Museum, which showcases the culture and traditions of the Himalayan region. In the evening, take a walk around the Mall Road and enjoy the local street food.

  3. Day 3: Tiffin Top
    Located on Ayarpatta Hill
    Time & Distance: 30 minutes (4.8 km) from Eco Cave Gardens

    In the morning, go for a trek to the Tiffin Top, a vantage point that offers panoramic views of the Himalayas and the Nainital valley. In the afternoon, visit the Governor's House, a British-era mansion that now serves as the official residence of the Governor of Uttarakhand. In the evening, relax by the bonfire at your hotel and enjoy the cool mountain breeze.

  4. Day 4: Pangot and Kilbury Bird Sanctuary
    Located in the Nainital district
    Time & Distance: 1 hour (15 km) from Tiffin Top

    In the morning, take a drive to the Pangot and Kilbury Bird Sanctuary, which is home to a variety of bird species including the Himalayan Griffon, Lammergeier, Blue-winged Minla, and Khalij Pheasant. In the afternoon, visit the Bhimtal Lake and enjoy boating and other water activities. In the evening, head back to Nainital and do some last-minute shopping at the Tibetan Market.

Recommendations

Aside from the above itinerary, you can also consider visiting the Snow View Point, which offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas, or the Nainital Zoo, which houses a variety of exotic animals including the endangered Siberian tiger. If you have an extra day, you can also take a day trip to Mukteshwar, a scenic hill station located 50 km from Nainital. To maximize your fun, make sure to try the local delicacies such as the Bal Mithai, a fudge-like sweet made with roasted khoya.
