Two-Day Family Friendly Itinerary for Shri Vaishno Devi Katra in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Vaishno Devi Temple
Located in Katra, 0.7 miles from Hotel Asia Vaishno Devi
    Estimated time: 4 hours

In the morning, head to the Vaishno Devi Temple, one of the most revered shrines in India. The temple is located on a hill and can be reached by a 12 km uphill trek or by helicopter. The trek takes around 4-6 hours, depending on your pace. The trek route is well paved and there are several shops and restaurants along the way. The helicopter service is also available for those who cannot trek or wish to save time. In the afternoon, enjoy the scenic views of the hill and visit the nearby Bhairavnath temple. In the evening, attend the aarti ceremony at the Vaishno Devi temple and seek blessings.

  2. Day 2: Adhkunwari
Located in Reasi, 13 miles from Hotel Asia Vaishno Devi
    Estimated time: 3 hours

Start your day early and head to Adhkunwari, a cave temple located about 6 km from the Vaishno Devi temple. The cave has a narrow passage that leads to a shrine dedicated to Goddess Vaishno Devi. The cave is believed to be the place where the goddess meditated for nine months before finally emerging as the holy pindis. It takes around 2-3 hours to visit the cave and return. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Dera Baba Banda temple, which is dedicated to Guru Gobind Singh's loyal follower Baba Banda Bahadur. In the evening, head back to Katra and spend some time shopping for souvenirs and local handicrafts.

Recommendations

If you have some time, you can also consider visiting the Katra town, which has several temples and parks. You can also take a side trip to Patnitop, which is a hill station located about 50 km from Katra. The place is known for its scenic beauty and adventure sports like paragliding and skiing. To maximize your fun, try to book the helicopter service in advance to avoid long waiting times. Also, carry enough water and snacks during your trek to the Vaishno Devi temple, as there are limited options available on the way. Finally, make sure to check the weather conditions before planning your trip, as the region experiences heavy rainfalls during August.
