3-Day Cultural Immersion Itinerary in Ujjain in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple
    10 minutes (2.3 km) from Ujjain Junction Railway Station

    The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India and a must-visit for those interested in Hinduism. The morning Aarti (prayer) at 4 AM is a mesmerizing experience. Afternoon, explore the ancient Ved Shala (Observatory) built by Maharaja Jai Singh II followed by lunch at the famous Poha-Jalebi shops. In the evening, witness the illuminated temple and taste the famous Ujjaini Chaat near Ram Ghat.

  2. Day 2: Kaliadeh Palace and Sandipani Ashram
    20 minutes (7.3 km) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

    Start the day by visiting the tranquil Kaliadeh Palace situated on the banks of the Shipra river. It is believed that Lord Krishna and Radha visited this palace. Learn about the history of the palace and take a boat ride in the river. Afternoon, visit the Sandipani Ashram, the place where Lord Krishna and Sudama studied. Learn about the Gurukul system and interact with the students. In the evening, visit the Harsiddhi Temple and witness the grand aarti.

  3. Day 3: Kal Bhairav Temple and Bhartrihari Caves
    25 minutes (8.7 km) from Sandipani Ashram

    Start the day by visiting the Kal Bhairav Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Kal Bhairav is the protector of Ujjain. After that, visit the Bhartrihari Caves, the place where the great philosopher Bhartrihari meditated. The caves are situated on the banks of the Shipra river, offering a serene atmosphere. In the afternoon, visit the Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir, followed by shopping for traditional handicrafts and fabrics at the local market. In the evening, attend the Shipra Aarti at the Ram Ghat.

Recommendations

If you have time, visit the Mangalnath Temple, the place where Mars (Mangal) was worshipped. You can also take a day trip to the nearby historical city of Mandu, famous for its forts and palaces. To maximize your fun, try the local food like Bhutte ki Kees, Sabudana Khichdi and Malpua. You can also attend the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, the largest spiritual gathering in the world, which will take place in Ujjain in 2028. Lastly, don't forget to take a holy dip in the Shipra river, believed to cleanse the soul.
