Exploring Wayanad from Chennai in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
3 hours 15 minutes (130 miles) from Chennai

Explore the prehistoric Edakkal Caves early in the morning. The caves are located on top of Ambukutty Mala, and you'll have to trek for about an hour to reach them. Witness the rock art and inscriptions dating back to the Neolithic era. Afternoon, you can visit the nearby Phantom Rock. This unique rock formation resembles a skull, and it is believed to have been formed by a meteorite. In the evening, head to the Kalpetta Market to experience the local culture and food.

  2. Day 2: Banasura Sagar Dam and Meenmutty Falls
1 hour 30 minutes (35 miles) from Edakkal Caves

Start your day with a visit to the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earth dam in India. Enjoy the scenic view of the dam and the surrounding mountains. Afternoon, you can visit the Meenmutty Falls, a three-tiered waterfall surrounded by lush greenery. The trek to the falls can be a bit tiring, but the view is worth it. In the evening, relax by the Soochipara Falls, which is a smaller waterfall but equally beautiful.

  3. Day 3: Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and Pookode Lake
1 hour 15 minutes (21 miles) from Banasura Sagar Dam

Afternoon, visit the Pookode Lake, a freshwater lake surrounded by forests and hills. You can enjoy boating, fish spa, and shopping for souvenirs. In the evening, go for a peaceful walk in the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary.

Recommendations

If you have an extra day, you can visit the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, which is known for its elephant population. You can also visit the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad, for a trekking adventure. Make sure to try the local delicacies like Malabar Parotta, Appam, and Kerala-style Biriyani. Don't forget to buy some spices like pepper, cardamom, and cinnamon, which are famous in Wayanad. To maximize your fun, hire a local guide who can help you explore the hidden gems of the place.
