Gangtok Family-Friendly Itinerary for June 2023

  1. Day 1: Tsomgo Lake
    40 minutes (17.5 km) from Gangtok city centre

    In the morning, explore the beautiful Tsomgo Lake. Located at an altitude of 12,400 feet, the lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and offers stunning views. You can also enjoy a Yak ride here. In the afternoon, visit the Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple, a holy shrine dedicated to an Indian Army soldier. Learn about the soldier's bravery and significance in Indian history. In the evening, return to Gangtok and explore the local markets for some shopping and street food.

  2. Day 2: Himalayan Zoological Park
    20 minutes (7.6 km) from Gangtok city centre

    Start your day at the Himalayan Zoological Park, home to a diverse range of Himalayan fauna. You can see the Red Panda, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Tahr and many other animals. In the afternoon, visit the Enchey Monastery, a 200-year-old monastery that showcases Tibetan architecture. In the evening, head to the Ganesh Tok viewpoint for panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains.

Recommendations

If you have time, consider visiting the Rumtek Monastery, one of the most significant monasteries in Sikkim. You can also take a day trip to Nathula Pass, a mountain pass on the Indo-China border. To maximize your fun, try the local delicacies like momos and thukpa. You can also take a cable car ride to see the city from a different perspective.
