4-Day Itinerary for Banaras in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Assi Ghat
    20 minutes (4.5 km) from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport

    Start your day early in the morning at Assi Ghat, one of the most popular and oldest ghats in Banaras. The morning aarti (prayer) ceremony is a must-see and will leave you feeling spiritually rejuvenated. After the aarti, enjoy a cup of freshly brewed tea and some local breakfast at one of the nearby cafes. Spend the afternoon exploring the nearby temples, including the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple. In the evening, take a boat ride and witness the breathtaking view of the illuminated ghats.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath
    30 minutes (10 km) from Assi Ghat

    Start your day with a visit to Sarnath, one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Explore the ancient ruins and visit the famous Dhamek Stupa and the Sarnath Museum. Afternoon, head back to Banaras and visit the Banaras Hindu University, home to the Bharat Kala Bhavan, a museum of art and archeology. End your day with a visit to the famous Ramnagar Fort, located on the opposite side of the river Ganges, and witness the evening aarti ceremony.

  3. Day 3: Manikarnika Ghat
    10 minutes (2 km) from Ramnagar Fort

    Start your day by witnessing the sunrise at the Manikarnika Ghat. This ghat is known for its cremation ceremonies and is considered one of the most sacred ghats in Banaras. After the sunrise, take a walk through the narrow alleys of Banaras and visit the local markets like Vishwanath Lane, Thatheri Bazaar, and Godowlia, where you can shop for souvenirs and traditional Banarasi silk sarees. In the afternoon, visit the Durga Temple and the Tulsi Manas Temple. In the evening, head to the famous Dashashwamedh Ghat and witness the grand aarti ceremony.

  4. Day 4: Chunar Fort
    2 hours (45 km) from Banaras

    Take a day trip to the Chunar Fort, located on the banks of the river Ganges. This fort has a rich history and was once ruled by the legendary King Vikramaditya. Explore the ancient architecture and the beautiful surroundings. In the evening, head back to Banaras and visit the Alamgir Mosque and the Kedar Ghat.

If you have extra time, consider visiting the nearby city of Allahabad, famous for the Kumbh Mela festival.
