Aristotelous Square is the heart of Thessaloniki and a fantastic place to start exploring. The square is surrounded by cafes, shops and historical buildings making it a great spot to soak up the atmosphere. You can take breathtaking sea views and stroll around.
The White Tower is the most famous landmark in Thessaloniki. Originally used as a prison, it now houses a museum that tell the story of the city from Ancient times to Modern Day. The top also offers stunning views of the city and the sea. Note: Closed on Mondays.
Experience a mix of history and culture in the Old Town of Ano Poli. Visit the Byzantine walls and castles, picturesque alleys and stunning views found here. You will find cozy restaurants and cafes around every corner. Don't miss the Agia Sofia church, a UNESCO world heritage site.
Most of the city center can be explored on foot or by using affordable public transportation which includes buses and taxis. Bike rentals are also a popular option. Expect to spend around 20 EUR per day on taxis and public transportation.
If you have more time, visit the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Byzantine Culture to explore Thessaloniki's history and heritage further. Don't forget to try street food like Souvlaki, gyros and local sweets like Bougatsa. If you have less time, you can skip Ano Poli but it's definitely worth it.
Thessaloniki has one airport, Thessaloniki International Airport (SKG), located about 14 km from the city center. Taxis are readily available and cost around 20-25 EUR, a one-way bus ticket is around 2 EUR and takes approximately 30 minutes.
