2-Day Banaras Cultural Immersion Itinerary in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Assi Ghat
    25 minutes (5.3 km) from Banaras Airport

    Assi Ghat is the southernmost ghat in Banaras and is a popular spot among locals and tourists alike. Start your day with a sunrise boat ride along the Ganges and witness the morning rituals and prayers. Take a stroll through the narrow lanes of the nearby villages and learn about the rural lifestyle of Banaras. Afternoon, visit the famous Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most revered temples in India. In the evening, head to the Dashashwamedh Ghat to witness the grand Ganga Aarti, a spectacular and spiritual ceremony that takes place daily.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath
    30 minutes (10.5 km) from Banaras Junction Railway Station

    Spend your second day exploring the ancient city of Sarnath, where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon. Visit the Dhamek Stupa, a towering structure that stands 128 feet tall, and the ruins of the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, where Buddha spent his first rainy season. In the afternoon, head to the Sarnath Museum to see the impressive collection of sculptures and artifacts from the Gupta and Maurya periods. End your day with a visit to the Chaukhandi Stupa, a beautiful octagonal tower that dates back to the 5th century.

If you have time, consider visiting the Ramnagar Fort, a beautiful 17th-century fort located on the eastern bank of the Ganges. Also, take a stroll through the Banaras Hindu University campus and visit the Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum, which houses a vast collection of miniature paintings, sculptures, and textiles. For a side trip, head to the nearby town of Chunar and visit the Chunar Fort, a medieval fort perched atop a hill overlooking the Ganges.
