Honeymoon Itinerary for Wayanad in December 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
    30 minutes (10.6 km) from Kalpetta

    In the morning, explore the ancient Edakkal Caves, famous for its prehistoric rock carvings. Trek up to the caves through a picturesque landscape. Enjoy lunch at the nearby cafe and then visit the Wayanad Heritage Museum, which houses artefacts from the region's tribal heritage. For the evening, head to the Pookode Lake, a scenic freshwater lake, for a boat ride and relax by the lakeside.

  2. Day 2: Banasura Sagar Dam
    1 hour 20 minutes (40.6 km) from Edakkal Caves

    Start the day at the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earth dam in India, which offers a stunning view of the surrounding mountains. Go on a trek to the nearby Banasura Hill, which offers a panoramic view of the dam and the lush green surroundings. For lunch, stop by in one of the local restaurants for some traditional Kerala cuisine. In the evening, head to the Kuruva Island, an uninhabited island in the Kabini River, to enjoy a peaceful boat ride in the serene surroundings.

  3. Day 3: Chembra Peak
    1 hour 10 minutes (31.8 km) from Banasura Sagar Dam

    Embark on a trek to the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad, to witness the stunning sunrise from the top. The trek is around 5 km long and takes approximately 3 hours to complete. Enjoy the breathtaking view of the surrounding hills and the heart-shaped lake on the top. After the trek, grab some lunch in one of the local restaurants, and head to the nearby tea plantation to witness the tea-making process. For the evening, enjoy a bonfire and a candlelit dinner under the stars at one of the local resorts.

  4. Day 4: Soochipara Falls
    1 hour 10 minutes (35.2 km) from Chembra Peak

    Soochipara Falls is the perfect place to end your honeymoon trip. Enjoy a refreshing bath in the cool waters of the falls, surrounded by the lush green forest. Take a short trek through the forest to get to the falls. Have lunch at one of the nearby restaurants. For the evening, visit the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, and spot some of the region's exotic wildlife. End your day with a romantic dinner at one of the local restaurants.

Recommendations

You can consider visiting the Thirunelli Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and the nearby Brahmagiri Peak. You can also take a side trip to the neighbouring towns of Sulthan Bathery and Mananthavady, which offer a glimpse of the region's rich history and culture. To maximise your fun, you can go on a night safari at the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, or a guided trek through the nearby forest. Don't forget to try some of the local delicacies, such as appam and stew, puttu and kadala curry, and Kerala-style biryani.
