2-Day Family Friendly Itinerary for Chennai in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Marina Beach
    12 minutes (2.7 km) from Chennai Central Railway Station

    Start your day with a morning walk on Marina Beach, India's longest urban beach measuring 13 km. Enjoy the fresh breeze and beautiful sunrise while taking in the views of the Bay of Bengal. For breakfast, head to Murugan Idli Shop in nearby Triplicane and try their famous soft idlis and spicy chutney.

    After breakfast, visit the Kapaleeswarar Temple, one of the oldest and most famous temples in Chennai. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has a magnificent gopuram (tower) that stands tall at 37 meters high. In the afternoon, visit the Government Museum to learn about the history and culture of Tamil Nadu. The museum has a vast collection of artefacts including sculptures, coins, paintings, and relics from Mohenjo-daro and Harappa.

    In the evening, head to Elliot's Beach in Besant Nagar and enjoy a delicious seafood dinner at the beachside restaurants. Try the freshly grilled prawns, fish fry, and crab masala. Wrap up your day with a relaxing walk on the beach and enjoy the sea breeze.

  2. Day 2: Mahabalipuram
    1 hour 14 minutes (56.5 km) from Chennai Central Railway Station

    Start early and head to Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to several ancient temples and monuments. Start your tour at the Shore Temple, built in the 8th century AD and overlooking the Bay of Bengal. Then head to the Pancha Rathas, a group of five monolithic temples carved out of a single rock.

    After that, visit the Krishna's Butterball, a massive rock balanced on a slope and seemingly defying the laws of physics. Take a break and have lunch at a local restaurant and try the traditional South Indian meal served on a banana leaf.

    In the afternoon, visit the Mahabalipuram Beach and spend some time relaxing on the sand. You can also try some water sports like surfing and jet skiing. In the evening, head back to Chennai and visit the famous shopping district of T. Nagar. Shop for traditional silk sarees, jewellery, and handicrafts. Don't forget to bargain and get the best possible price!

Apart from the above itinerary, you can also consider visiting the Vandalur Zoo, the second largest zoo in India, or taking a heritage walk of Fort St. George, the first British fortress in India. You can also plan a day trip to the temple town of Kanchipuram, famous for its silk sarees and ancient temples. To maximize your fun, try attending a classical dance performance or a music concert in the evening. Finally, don't forget to try the famous filter coffee and masala chai available at the local tea stalls.
