4-Day Family-Friendly Itinerary for Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple
    10 minutes (1.5 km) from Ujjain Junction

    Start your day by visiting the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, which is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered one of the most sacred temples in India. After your visit, walk around the temple complex and explore the local markets nearby. In the afternoon, visit the Kaliadeh Palace, which is situated on the banks of the Shipra River. It is a beautiful palace built during the Holkar Dynasty and is surrounded by lush green gardens. Wrap up the day by watching the evening aarti at the Mahakaleshwar Temple.

  2. Day 2: Sandipani Ashram
    20 minutes (7.5 km) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

    Start your day by visiting the Sandipani Ashram, which is a Gurukul (ancient Indian school) that is mentioned in the epic Mahabharata. It is now a modern school that teaches Vedic education to children. Take a tour of the ashram and learn about the ancient Indian education system. In the afternoon, visit the Bhartrihari Caves, which are located on the banks of the Shipra River. These caves are believed to be the meditation spot of Bhartrihari, who was a great scholar and a devotee of Lord Shiva. End the day by taking a boat ride on the Shipra River.

  3. Day 3: Kal Bhairav Temple
    15 minutes (4.5 km) from Sandipani Ashram

    Start your day by visiting the Kal Bhairav Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Bhairav, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. This temple is known for its unique architecture and is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus. After your visit, head to the Vikram Kirti Mandir Museum, which is a museum dedicated to the life and achievements of King Vikramaditya, who is a legendary king in Indian mythology. In the evening, visit the Ram Ghat, which is situated on the banks of the Shipra River. It is a beautiful ghat (a series of steps leading down to the river) and is a great spot to watch the sunset.

  4. Day 4: Mangalnath Temple
    20 minutes (7 km) from Kal Bhairav Temple

    Start your day by visiting the Mangalnath Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Mangal (Mars). It is believed to be the birthplace of Mars according to Hindu mythology. The temple is situated on the top of a hill and offers a panoramic view of the city. After your visit, head to the Harsiddhi Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Annapurna, one of the ten Mahavidyas in Hinduism. It is a beautiful temple with intricate carvings and is considered one of the Shaktipeeths in India. End your day by visiting the Triveni Museum, which has a collection of ancient artifacts and sculptures from the Mauryan and Gupta periods.
