October 2023: Family-Friendly 6-Day Itinerary to Puri via Bhuvaneshwar, Orissa from Kolkata, West Bengal

  1. Day 1: Bhuvaneshwar
    20 minutes (4.5 miles) from Biju Patnaik International Airport

    In the morning, visit the Lingaraj Temple, one of the finest examples of Hindu architecture in India. After lunch, explore the ancient Khandagiri and Udayagiri Caves, which date back to the 2nd century BCE. In the evening, visit the Nandankanan Zoological Park to see white tigers, lions, and other exotic animals.

  2. Day 2: Puri
    2 hours (64 miles) from Bhuvaneshwar

    In the morning, head to the Jagannath Temple, one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus. After lunch, take a dip in the Bay of Bengal at Puri Beach and enjoy the sunset. In the evening, visit the Puri Beach Market for unique souvenirs and local handicrafts.

  3. Day 3: Konark
    1 hour (36 miles) from Puri

    In the morning, visit the famous Sun Temple in Konark, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a masterpiece of temple architecture. After lunch, head to the Chandrabhaga Beach to relax and soak up the sun. In the evening, watch the Light and Sound show at the Konark Museum for an immersive experience into the temple's history.

    In the morning, visit the Mukteswara Temple, one of the finest examples of Orissan architecture. After lunch, explore the Odisha State Museum to learn about the state's rich cultural heritage. In the evening, visit the Ekamra Haat, a craft village featuring a variety of handicrafts from across the state.

Recommendations

Orissa has a rich cultural heritage and several other places of interest to explore. A side trip to the Ratnagiri and Udayagiri Buddhist excavation sites is highly recommended. You may also visit the Dhauli Hill, a site of great historical significance with ancient rock edicts. Lastly, try to catch a performance of the Gotipua dance, a traditional dance form of Orissa.
