2-Day Cultural Immersion Itinerary for Ujjain Trip - July 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
10 minutes (2.4 km) from Ujjain Junction railway station

Start your cultural immersion in Ujjain with a visit to the famous Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. The temple is open for darshan from 3:00 AM to 11:00 PM. The morning pooja is a must-see event where the Lord Shiva is adorned with flowers, sandalwood paste, and milk. Afternoon is a great time to explore the vibrant bazaars around the temple complex. In the evening, attend the Bhasma Aarti, a daily ritual where the Lord is worshipped with ashes.

  2. Day 2: Kaliadeh Palace and Vedh Shala Observatory
20 minutes (6.7 km) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

Your second day of cultural immersion begins at the Kaliadeh Palace, located on the banks of the Shipra River. The palace was built in the early 18th century and has beautiful gardens and fountains. Afterward, head to the Vedh Shala Observatory, a historic astronomical observatory that dates back to the 17th century. You can witness the ancient instruments used to measure the positions of stars and planets. In the evening, catch the Narmada Aarti at Ram Ghat, a beautiful ceremony performed on the banks of the Narmada River.

Recommendations

Apart from the above itinerary, you can explore other temples such as the Kal Bhairav Temple and the Sandipani Ashram. A side trip to the nearby town of Mandu is also highly recommended, where you can see medieval forts, palaces, and mosques. To maximize your fun, try the local street food like Poha-Jalebi and Bhutte ki Kees. Lastly, don't forget to shop for traditional handloom sarees, artifacts, and souvenirs in the local bazaars.
