What is the ideal duration to visit Vietnam and What is the best time to Visit?

Plan 10–14 days for a first visit to Vietnam’s main highlights; allow 2–3 weeks to travel from north to south at a more relaxed pace. March and April are often the best months for a countrywide trip, although conditions vary by region.

How long to spend

  • 7–10 days: Focus on one region, or choose a few stops such as Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, and Hoi An. Covering the whole country will feel rushed.
  • 10–14 days: A good first-trip length for a north-to-south itinerary, with time for key cities and one or two natural or cultural highlights.
  • 2–3 weeks: Best for a slower journey, extra destinations, and more flexibility for beaches, trekking, or countryside stays.

Vietnam is long and travel between regions takes time, so avoid packing in too many stops. Domestic flights can save time on longer journeys.

Best time to visit

  • March–April: Generally a strong choice for visiting multiple regions, with relatively pleasant conditions in much of the country.
  • North (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa): Often most comfortable in October–April; summers can be hot, humid, and rainy.
  • Central Vietnam (Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang): Typically drier from February–August. Heavy rain and possible storms are more common around September–January.
  • South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc): Usually dry from December–April and rainy from May–November; showers are often brief but can affect plans.

Weather varies year to year, and the rainy season does not mean constant rain. If traveling during Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year, usually in January or February), book ahead: transport and accommodation can be busy, and some businesses close.
