Travel time: Early April
Tobiano, perched above Kamloops Lake, occupies a unique position within British Columbia's interior "dry belt." Early April marks the energetic beginning of the golf season, characterized by a transition from the tail-end of winter’s chill to the bright, arid spring the Thompson Valley is known for.
Tobiano is situated in a rain shadow created by the Coast Mountains. While coastal BC may be damp and overcast in early April, Tobiano is often bathed in sunlight. This is one of the driest periods of the year for the region. Unlike the lush, humid springs of the coast, the air here is crisp and profoundly dry, which significantly impacts how you perceive the temperature.
During early April, the climate behaves with high volatility between day and night. You will likely experience diurnal temperature swings—often as much as 15°C to 20°C (approx. 27°F to 36°F) within a single day.
The most significant weather variable at Tobiano is the wind. The golf course is exposed on a plateau, and Kamloops Lake acts as a natural funnel.
Early April is a transitional period. While the valley floor is greening up and the sagebrush is coming to life, you may still see snow on the distant mountain peaks. Historically, this is one of the clearest times of year before the late spring rains arrive in May and June. It is a period of high visibility and high-contrast light, making the turquoise waters of Kamloops Lake and the red-rock hoodoos stand out vividly.
