Manali Weather Guide: Experience the Golden Autumn Transition

Travel time: 10/11/2026

The Golden Transition

Traveling to Manali in early November places you at the heart of the region's autumn transition. This is a brief but spectacular window between the retreating summer monsoons and the onset of the harsh Himalayan winter. During this time, the landscape shifts from the lush greens of late September to deep golds and oranges as the apple orchards and deodar forests prepare for dormancy. The air is at its cleanest, offering the sharpest visibility of the year for viewing distant Himalayan peaks.

Daily Rhythms and the "Chill Factor"

In November, the sun is your primary source of warmth. The climate is characterized by a significant diurnal temperature range, meaning you will experience two very different worlds in a single day:

  • Mornings: Expect a biting, crisp cold. The sun often takes until 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM to peek over the high ridges and actually warm the valley floor.
  • Afternoons: Once the sun is high, the weather feels surprisingly pleasant. Daytime highs typically hover around 15°C to 18°C (59°F to 64°F). Because the air is thin and dry at 2,050 meters, the sun’s intensity is high; it may feel much warmer than the thermometer suggests.
  • Evenings: As soon as the sun dips behind the mountains (usually by 4:30 PM or 5:00 PM), the temperature drops precipitously. Lows can fall to 3°C to 6°C (37°F to 43°F), often reaching near-freezing levels by late night.

Sky Conditions and Phenomena

November is historically the driest period of the year in Manali. You can expect deep blue, cloudless skies for the majority of your stay. The humidity levels drop significantly compared to the monsoon months, reaching some of their lowest annual points. This dry air makes the cold feel "sharper" rather than the damp cold you might find in coastal or lower-altitude regions.

  • First Dusting: While heavy snowfall in Manali town is rare this early in the season, the high-altitude passes like Rohtang Pass often see their first significant accumulation during this time.
  • The Wind: You may notice a steady, cooling breeze funneling through the Beas River valley in the late afternoon as cold air descends from the higher glaciers.

Microclimates and Variations

Manali’s weather is highly dependent on altitude and orientation to the sun:

  • Old Manali vs. Mall Road: Parts of Old Manali sit higher and may lose the sun earlier in the afternoon than the lower market areas.
  • Solang Valley: Located about 13km away and slightly higher, Solang will consistently be 2-3 degrees cooler than the main town.
  • Rohtang Pass/Atal Tunnel: If you venture north through the tunnel toward Lahaul or up to Rohtang, you are entering a high-altitude desert climate. The wind here is much more aggressive, and temperatures can remain below freezing even at midday.

Local Life and Adaptation

Locals use this period to prepare for the long winter. You will notice the "Hamam" (traditional wood-burning stoves) starting to smoke in many guest houses and homes. The lifestyle shifts indoors as night falls, with the communal evening fire becoming the center of social life. Because the sun is so vital for warmth, local activities are strictly compressed into the 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM window.
