  1. Day 1: Golden Temple
10 minutes (2.3 km) from Amritsar Railway Station

Start your day by visiting the iconic Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib. The temple is considered the holiest shrine of Sikhism and is surrounded by a beautiful lake. Spend your morning exploring the temple complex and marvel at the stunning architecture and intricate details. Afterward, enjoy a delicious langar (community meal) served in the dining hall. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Jallianwala Bagh, a public garden that commemorates the tragic massacre of peaceful protesters by British forces in 1919. End your day by watching the Wagah Border Ceremony, a military practice that takes place every evening at the India-Pakistan border.

  2. Day 2: Partition Museum and Gobindgarh Fort
20 minutes (4.3 km) from Golden Temple

Start your day by visiting the Partition Museum, which tells the story of the division of India and Pakistan in 1947. The museum's exhibits include personal belongings of refugees and oral histories of survivors. In the afternoon, visit Gobindgarh Fort, a historic fort that dates back to the 18th century. The fort has been restored and converted into a museum with interactive exhibits, live shows and performances. End your day with a visit to the colorful local markets, such as Hall Bazaar or Katra Jaimal Singh Market, to shop for souvenirs and handicrafts.

Recommendations

If you have more time, consider visiting the Durgiana Temple, also known as the Silver Temple, which is a Hindu temple located near the Golden Temple. The Ram Bagh Garden is a beautiful park that features a museum, a summer palace and a zoo. Don't miss out on tasting the local cuisine, such as Amritsari Kulcha, Lassi, and Makki di Roti with Sarson da Saag. If you want to take a day trip, consider visiting the nearby city of Wagah, which is known for its tranquil gardens and historical sites.

If you're looking to maximize your fun, consider taking a tuk-tuk ride around the city or renting a bicycle to explore the streets. Make sure to bring sunscreen and a hat, as it can get very hot and sunny in July. Also, keep in mind that the Golden Temple and other religious sites require visitors to cover their heads and remove their shoes.
