Four-Day Itinerary for Darjeeling in December 2023

  1. Day 1: Tiger Hill
    20 minutes (5.6 km) from Darjeeling Chowk Bazaar

    In the morning, head to Tiger Hill to catch the sunrise over the Kanchenjunga mountains. Be sure to get there early to secure a good spot. Afterward, visit the Batasia Loop and the War Memorial, both of which offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. In the afternoon, take a stroll through the Happy Valley Tea Estate and learn about the tea-making process. In the evening, visit the Ghoom Monastery, one of the oldest in Darjeeling, and observe the evening prayer ceremony.

  2. Day 2: Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park
    10 minutes (2.5 km) from Darjeeling Chowk Bazaar

    Spend the morning at the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, which is home to the endangered snow leopard and red panda. Afterward, visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute to learn about the history of mountaineering in the region. In the afternoon, explore the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre and shop for handicrafts. In the evening, take a leisurely walk through the Darjeeling Mall and enjoy the local food and drinks.

  3. Day 3: Darjeeling Ropeway and Japanese Peace Pagoda
    15 minutes (3.4 km) from Darjeeling Chowk Bazaar

    Take a ride on the Darjeeling Ropeway in the morning for panoramic views of the Darjeeling Hills. Afterward, visit the Japanese Peace Pagoda and learn about its history and significance. In the afternoon, visit the Observatory Hill and the Mahakal Temple, considered one of the most sacred places in Darjeeling. In the evening, take a walk through the Chowrasta Mall and enjoy the street performances and local cuisine.

  4. Day 4: Mirik Lake
    1 hour 20 minutes (50.7 km) from Darjeeling Chowk Bazaar

    Spend the day at the Mirik Lake, a scenic spot surrounded by forests and hills. You can enjoy boating, horse riding and other activities here. The lake is surrounded by tea gardens and offers a stunning view of the mountains. In the evening, return to Darjeeling and take a walk along the Darjeeling Rangeet Valley Ropeway.

Recommendations

If you have time, consider taking a side trip to Kalimpong, a small town known for its orchids and handicrafts. You can also take a toy train ride from Darjeeling to Ghum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To maximize your fun, try the local momos and thukpa, a Tibetan noodle soup. Finally, be sure to wake up early to catch the sunrise at each location, as the views are truly spectacular.
