4-Day Varkala Itinerary in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Janardhana Swamy Temple
    10 minutes (2.1 km) from Varkala Beach

    In the morning, visit the ancient Janardhana Swamy Temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is known for its beautiful architecture. The temple is located on a hill, offering fantastic views of Varkala. In the afternoon, head to Varkala Beach, a popular spot for swimming and surfing. In the evening, try some delicious seafood at one of the many beachside restaurants.

  2. Day 2: Sivagiri Mutt and Kappil Beach
    15 minutes (5.5 km) from Janardhana Swamy Temple

    Start your day with a visit to Sivagiri Mutt, the final resting place of Sri Narayana Guru. This peaceful ashram is located on top of a hill and is a great place to meditate. In the afternoon, head to Kappil Beach, a secluded beach that is perfect for a relaxing swim. In the evening, take a stroll along the cliff and watch the sunset.

  3. Day 3: Anjengo Fort and Ponnumthuruthu Island
    25 minutes (10 km) from Sivagiri Mutt

    In the morning, visit Anjengo Fort, a historic fort that was used by the British East India Company. You can see the remains of the fort, including a cemetery and a chapel. In the afternoon, head to Ponnumthuruthu Island, a serene island that is home to a 100-year-old Shiva temple. Take a boat ride to the island and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. In the evening, relax at your hotel or go for a walk on the beach.

  4. Day 4: Varkala Tunnel and Golden Island
    20 minutes (6.7 km) from Anjengo Fort

    In the morning, visit the Varkala Tunnel, a 924 ft long tunnel built in the 19th century to transport goods from the coast to the backwaters. In the afternoon, head to Golden Island, a beautiful island located in the backwaters of Varkala. Take a boat ride to the island and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. In the evening, try some local snacks at the Varkala Beach Bazaar.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting the Kappil Bhagavathy Temple, the Kollam Beach, or the Kollam backwaters. You can also take a day trip to the nearby city of Thiruvananthapuram, which is known for its museums and gardens. To maximize your fun, try some of the local cuisines, such as the seafood, appam, and puttu. Don't forget to try some of the local coconut water and chai tea. Finally, make sure to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated, as the weather can be hot and humid in June.
