Drive from Bagdogra (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to Gangtok (3.5–4.5h). Scenic uphill drive along NH10; plan for tea/photostops. This is your orientation transfer and you’ll check in at the hotel.
Popular local spot on MG Marg for momos, thukpa and Tibetan dishes — great first taste of Sikkimese-Tibetan cuisine. MG Marg has many options but this is dependable for fresh Tibetan food.
Leisurely stroll on pedestrian MG Marg — handicraft shops, bakeries and views of the town; great for getting acclimatised and buying permits/tickets if needed.
Baker's Cafe (MG Marg) is popular for pizzas, sandwiches and local specials; otherwise try a local Nepali/Tibetan restaurant for dal-bhat or thukpa. Relax and acclimatise — avoid heavy exertion on day 1.
Drive ~1.5–2h to Tsomgo Lake at 3,753 m. Lake is visited on most days but opening usually 6:00am–4:00pm; check road and weather. The lake is scenic and sacred; short walks around the rim.
Nathu La (4,310 m) is a border pass to Tibet — open for tourists only when permits are issued (check current schedule; historically open Thursday–Sunday with advance permits). If permits not available, skip and return to Gangtok. Permits must be arranged via hotel/tour operator days in advance.
If back in Gangtok, have a relaxed lunch at 'Taste of Tibet' or 'Hotel Allure' style restaurants; on the road, a packed lunch or dhaba meal near the highway is practical.
Choose a comfortable sit-down dinner with warming soups and local stews; many hotels serve hearty Sikkim/Nepali meals which help recovery and acclimatisation.
An early breakfast before the drive; choose light carbs and protein to fuel a ~4–5 hour drive to Pelling. Hotels typically serve breakfast from 7:00am.
A scenic but winding 4–5 hour drive. Plan for a stop in Namchi to see the Samdruptse statue and Siddheswara Dham (statue complex and Char Dham replica).
Early drive to a viewpoint (many hotels have a short viewpoint nearby) for sunrise over Mount Kanchenjunga — clarity depends on weather; best on cold, clear mornings.
A tranquil sacred lake about 1h from Pelling; believed to grant wishes and surrounded by prayer flags and forest — open around 6:00am–5:00pm, easy short walk.
Visit Singshore — one of the tallest suspension bridges in Sikkim — then Rabdentse ruins (historic capital with panoramic views). Both are great for short walks and photos.
Choose a cosy restaurant; local trout (seasonal) and vegetable preparations are good choices. Confirm opening hours—many small eateries close earlier in remote towns.
Take an easy afternoon walk to nearby viewpoints or short forest trails; see snowline views if weather is clear. Trails are short but uneven; wear sturdy shoes.
Explore local village life, talk to lodge owners about Khangchendzonga park history, or simply relax with chai. Mobile connectivity may be patchy — enjoy the quiet.
