Shoestring Budget 3-Day Itinerary for Wayanad in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
    30 minutes (12.5 km) from Kalpetta

    In the morning, head to Edakkal Caves, a pre-historic site with ancient rock art. The hike up to the caves is steep but worth the effort. Afternoon can be spent exploring the nearby Sultan Bathery, with its historic Jain temple and the Regional Agricultural Research Station. In the evening, take a stroll in the Kalpetta town market, known for its local handicrafts and spices.

  2. Day 2: Meenmutty Falls
    1 hour 20 minutes (50 km) from Kalpetta

    Begin your day with a drive to Meenmutty Falls, the largest waterfall in Wayanad. The hike to the falls is challenging, but the views of the falls and the lush green forests around are breathtaking. Afternoon can be spent at Pookode Lake, surrounded by evergreen forests and home to a variety of freshwater fish. In the evening, visit the Chain Tree, a popular tourist spot that tells an interesting local legend.

  3. Day 3: Thirunelli Temple
    1 hour 45 minutes (60 km) from Kalpetta

    Start your day with a visit to the ancient Thirunelli Temple, surrounded by mountains and forests. The temple is known for its unique architecture and is an important pilgrimage site in the region. Afternoon can be spent exploring the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, home to a variety of flora and fauna including elephants, tigers and leopards. In the evening, head back to Kalpetta and visit the Uravu Bamboo Craft Centre, known for its exquisite bamboo handicrafts.

If you have time, you can also consider a visit to the Banasura Sagar Dam, the second-largest earth dam in Asia, or the Kuruva Island, a river delta formed by the Kabini River that is home to a variety of rare plants and birds. A side trip to the nearby town of Sulthan Bathery can also be considered, known for its historic landmarks and scenic beauty.
