Kathmandu

Transit Gorakhpur → Kathmandu — Arrival & Kathmandu Valley Intro

Morning:

Leave Gorakhpur early and cross the border into Nepal — whether by private car or bus, you’ll arrive at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport mid-morning. After clearing immigration, head to Thamel to drop your bags at a guesthouse and take a brisk walk to Garden of Dreams for a peaceful coffee and a light snack while acclimating to the city’s energy and altitude.

Afternoon:

Spend the afternoon on a compact Kathmandu Valley introduction: visit nearby Durbar Square to admire Hanuman Dhoka’s courtyards and the living goddess Kumari’s residence, then stroll to the historic Kasthamandap site and the bustling markets of Ason for spices and handicrafts. If time allows, take a short taxi ride to Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple) for panoramic city views and your first taste of Buddhist stupa rituals as prayer flags flutter overhead.

Evening:

As dusk falls, return to Thamel for a traditional Nepali dinner — try dal bhat with gundruk or momo at a well-rated local restaurant like OR2K or OR2K’s alternatives in the area — and wander the lantern-lit streets to experience Kathmandu’s lively nightlife and souvenir shops. Finish the evening with a rooftop view of the valley or an early night to rest up for the full day of exploration planned for tomorrow.

Day 2 · Mon, Dec 15
Kathmandu → Pokhara

Explore Kathmandu & Drive/Fly to Pokhara

Morning:

Start your day with a hearty Nepali breakfast in Thamel, then head to Patan Durbar Square to admire its Newar architecture and the intricately carved Krishna Mandir; wander through Patan’s artisans’ alleys to watch metalworkers and paubha painters at work. If you prefer a faster option, catch a short scenic flight to Pokhara from Tribhuvan Airport mid-morning — the aerial approach gives you your first sweeping views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Afternoon:

If you drove or took a tourist coach, arrive into Pokhara and settle into a lakeside guesthouse on Lake Phewa; stroll the lakeside promenade to the iconic Tal Barahi temple and enjoy a relaxing boat ride for postcard views of the Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) peak. Alternatively, if flying in, use the afternoon to visit the International Mountain Museum and the peaceful World Peace Pagoda (reachable by boat plus short hike) for sunset vistas over the Annapurnas.

Evening:

As dusk falls, dine at one of Lakeside’s cozy restaurants—try local trout or a momo plate—then unwind with a riverside bar or a quiet rooftop view across the lit-up lake and mountain silhouettes. Prepare your gear and rest early tonight; tomorrow you’ll explore more of Pokhara before heading toward Jomsom and the approach to Muktinath.

Day 3 · Tue, Dec 16
Pokhara → Jomsom / Muktinath approach

Pokhara Highlights & Travel toward Muktinath (Jomsom / Pokhara route)

Morning:

Wake early for a sunrise boat on Phewa Lake — glide to Tal Barahi temple as the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) peaks glow pink, then stroll Lakeside to grab a strong Nepali coffee and a plate of local trout or momo. After breakfast, visit the International Mountain Museum to brush up on Himalayan cultures and routes before preparing for your onward journey to Jomsom; if you’ve booked the scenic mountain flight, expect dramatic views of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri on departure.

Afternoon:

If traveling by road/jeep, begin the drive toward Beni/Jomsom via the Kali Gandaki valley, stopping for a simple village lunch and to stretch at viewpoints that reveal the gorge and towering Annapurna south and Dhaulagiri; on the Jomsom flight option, land in Jomsom mid-afternoon and take time to explore the windy market town and visit the nearby Kagbeni rim for early glimpses of the trail to Muktinath. Use this time to check gear, pick up any last supplies in Jomsom, and acclimatize to the dryer, higher-altitude air before tomorrow’s pilgrimage.

Evening:

Settle into a teahouse or guesthouse in Jomsom (or a roadside lodge en route) and enjoy a warming dal bhat or thukpa while swapping notes with other trekkers about conditions toward Muktinath. As night falls, rest early — the thin air and tomorrow’s higher-altitude walk or short jeep ride to Muktinath will require a fresh start and an early departure.

Day 4 · Wed, Dec 17
Muktinath → Jomsom → Pokhara/Kathmandu

Muktinath Pilgrimage & Return Journey (Jomsom → Pokhara/Kathmandu)

Morning:

Rise before dawn in Jomsom and take the short jeep ride or the mule track up to Muktinath to arrive for first light at the sacred Muktinath Temple and its 108 stone water spouts; participate in the cleansing ritual, offer a prayer at the Vishnu shrine, and watch Tibetan pilgrims performing kora around the gompa. Breathe in the crisp high-altitude air as you explore nearby Mustang-style mani walls, the ancient Jwalamukhi (flame) and the Ghar Gompa, capturing panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri ranges.

Afternoon:

After your pilgrimage, descend to Jomsom for a leisurely lunch in a local teahouse—try thakali dal bhat or yak stew—then pick up any souvenirs at the windy market before boarding your afternoon flight or jeep toward Pokhara; if weather permits, the flight back treats you to spectacular aerial vistas of the Kali Gandaki gorge and Annapurna massif. If you’re continuing by road all the way to Kathmandu, expect scenic stops in Beni for photos and a break to stretch as the landscape changes from arid Mustang to greener river valleys.

Evening:

Arrive in Pokhara at dusk to relax by Phewa Lake with a hot meal and a deserved drink, or if you returned to Kathmandu, settle into Thamel for a warm Nepali dinner and a rooftop view to reflect on the pilgrimage — try a comforting bowl of thukpa and local chiya. Use the evening to sort photos, thank fellow travelers, and rest: tomorrow you’ll either enjoy Pokhara’s remaining sights or prepare for onward travel home.
