3-Day Amritsar Nature Itinerary in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Golden Temple
15 minutes (3.5 km) from Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport

In the morning, visit the serene Golden Temple, one of the most revered sites in India. The stunning complex of gleaming golden buildings is set in a pool of sacred water and draws hordes of visitors every day. You can witness the Sikh tradition of langar, a free community kitchen, serving hot meals to nearly 50,000 people daily.

In the afternoon, head to Wagah Border, a significant landmark that separates India and Pakistan. It is known for the flag-lowering ceremony, which takes place every evening.

In the evening, explore the local street food, especially the kulcha, a type of stuffed bread, and lassi, a refreshing yogurt drink.

  2. Day 2: Harike Wetland and Bird Sanctuary
1 hour 20 minutes (59.2 km) from Golden Temple

Start your day early and head to the Harike Wetland and Bird Sanctuary, one of the largest wetlands in northern India and a paradise for bird-watchers. You can take a boat ride to explore the wetlands and spot migratory birds such as cranes, eagles, and ducks.

In the afternoon, visit the Jallianwala Bagh, a public garden and memorial to the hundreds of innocent Indians who were massacred by British troops in 1919. The site is a reminder of India's struggle for independence.

In the evening, stroll around the bustling local markets and shop for traditional handicrafts and textiles.

  3. Day 3: Durgiana Temple and Ram Bagh Gardens
15 minutes (3.7 km) from Golden Temple

Start your day by visiting the Durgiana Temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Durga. The temple is a beautiful example of traditional Indian architecture and is often referred to as the Silver Temple because of its intricately carved silver doors.

In the afternoon, visit the Ram Bagh Gardens, a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city. The gardens were built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh and are home to a variety of plants, trees, and flowers. You can also visit the summer palace of the Maharaja, which now houses a museum.

In the evening, head to the Gobindgarh Fort, a historic fortress that has been restored and transformed into a cultural center. The fort offers a glimpse into the region's vibrant past through light and sound shows, live performances, and exhibitions.

Recommendations

Amritsar has a lot to offer for nature lovers. You can also consider visiting the Pul Kanjari, a historical village and museum, and the Rambagh Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to various species of animals and birds. If you have more time, you can also plan a day trip to the nearby hill stations of Dalhousie and Dharamshala. Make sure to try the local cuisine, including Amritsari fish, tandoori chicken, and phirni, a sweet rice pudding. Don't forget to book your flights and hotels in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles. Happy travels!
