Arrival and city introduction

Late Morning

Start gently at Lodhi Garden in Lodhi Estate, where Delhi actually feels breathable for a while. Aim for around 9:30–11:00 a.m. if you can, when the paths are still relatively quiet and the light is soft on the old tombs. It’s free to enter, open from sunrise to sunset, and the easy loop through the lawns and monuments is the perfect way to shake off arrival mode without rushing. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water, and if you’re coming by cab, ask to be dropped near the Lodhi Road side for the smoothest start.

Midday

Walk or take a short auto to the India Habitat Centre on Lodhi Road, which works beautifully as a mid-day reset. You’ll find cafés and casual lunch options inside, plus shaded courtyards and a more polished, cultural side of Delhi that locals actually use. If you want something light, this is a good place for coffee or a simple meal before the afternoon; budget roughly ₹500–1,200 depending on where you stop. It’s also a nice place to linger for a bit if you want to browse the design shops or just sit and people-watch.

Afternoon

From there, head to Khan Market, one of the city’s easiest neighborhoods to wander without a plan. It’s compact, walkable, and full of bookshops, boutiques, bakeries, and places for dessert or a snack if lunch at India Habitat Centre was light. Give yourself time to browse rather than trying to “do” it all; the charm is in the small stops, especially around the main market lanes. If you want coffee, this is where Delhi tends to get pleasantly slow for a while. Later in the afternoon, make your way to Humayun’s Tomb in Nizamuddin East; the best light usually lands in the late afternoon, and the red sandstone and symmetry really glow then. Tickets are usually around ₹40 for Indian citizens and ₹600 for foreign visitors, and it’s worth budgeting about 90 minutes so you can walk the gardens at an unhurried pace.

Evening

Finish the day with dinner at Indian Accent at The Lodhi, Lodhi Road. It’s one of Delhi’s best-known modern Indian restaurants, and the tasting menu is the move if you want a memorable first night rather than a random meal; expect roughly ₹3,500–6,000 per person, plus drinks if you’re doing a full evening. Book ahead if possible, especially on a Friday, and plan a cab between Humayun’s Tomb and The Lodhi since traffic can be sluggish even over a short distance. Keep the rest of the night easy after dinner — this day already gives you a good first feel for Delhi without overpacking it.
