Day 1 · Mon, Apr 13
Varanasi

Old city and riverfront

  1. Assi Ghat — Assi Ghat area — Best for an easy late-afternoon start by the river, with a lively local feel and sunset views; evening, ~1 hour.
  2. Baba Lassi — Godowlia — A classic stop for thick Banarasi lassi after the ghat walk; evening, ~30 minutes, approx. ₹80–150 per person.
  3. Kashi Chat Bhandar — Godowlia — Go here for iconic Varanasi street food like tamatar chaat and kachori-aloo; evening, ~45 minutes, approx. ₹150–300 per person.
  4. Dashashwamedh Ghat — riverfront near Godowlia — The city’s most famous ghat, ideal for the Ganga Aarti atmosphere and crowd energy; evening, ~1.5 hours.
  5. Ravidas Ghat Promenade — south riverfront — A quieter post-aarti riverside stretch to decompress and watch the river at night; night, ~45 minutes.

Late Afternoon by the River

Start at Assi Ghat for an easy, low-pressure entry into Varanasi’s river life. This stretch feels more local and less overwhelming than the central ghats, especially if you arrive around 4:30–5:00 PM when the light softens and the steps start filling with students, chai sellers, and boatmen. It’s a good place to sit for a bit, watch the Ganga, and take a slow walk along the ghats before diving into the busier old-city lanes. If you want a boat, negotiate before boarding; short rides usually run around ₹200–500 depending on the time and crowd.

Snack Stop in Godowlia

From Assi Ghat, head toward Godowlia by auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw, which is usually the simplest move in the old city once the lanes get crowded. First stop: Baba Lassi for one of those heavy, creamy Banarasi lassis that pretty much counts as a snack and dessert at the same time. Expect a quick queue in the evening, and budget about ₹80–150 per person. After that, walk or take a short rickshaw hop to Kashi Chat Bhandar for the real local street-food hit—tamatar chaat, kachori-aloo, and other chaats that are spicy, messy, and absolutely worth it. This is the kind of place where you go in hungry, eat fast, and let the lane chaos be part of the fun; budget roughly ₹150–300 each.

Evening Aarti and the Main Ghat Energy

Next, make your way to Dashashwamedh Ghat, which is the center of gravity for the evening in Varanasi. Aim to get there at least 30–45 minutes before the Ganga Aarti starts so you can find a decent spot on the steps or from a rooftop nearby if the crowd is intense. The atmosphere gets packed, noisy, and a little theatrical in the best way—bells, chants, incense, photographers, and people from everywhere all layered into one scene. If you’re coming from Godowlia, walking can be faster than driving because the lanes around the ghat often clog up; autos usually drop you short and you finish on foot.

Quiet Night Walk

After the aarti, don’t rush straight back. Head south to Ravidas Ghat Promenade for a calmer end to the day, where the river feels open again and the noise drops off fast. It’s a good decompression walk after the crowd energy at Dashashwamedh Ghat, and at night the riverfront has a softer, more reflective mood. Grab a few minutes sitting by the water, then call an auto back to your stay; late-evening rides within central Varanasi usually stay affordable, but it helps to agree on the fare before leaving.
