Late Morning

Kick off at The Getty Center, and give yourself time to arrive without rushing — parking is usually around $25 per car, and the tram up the hill adds to the “this is very LA” feeling. The museum itself is free, and the best way to enjoy it is to wander a little instead of trying to power through the galleries. Go for the architecture, the light, and the gardens as much as the art; the Central Garden is especially good for a first-day reset, and the views over Brentwood and the basin are some of the best in the city. If you’re there around opening time, crowds are lighter and the air is still crisp before the afternoon haze rolls in.

Early Afternoon

Afterward, head a few minutes west to Bel Air Westgate Coffee for a caffeine break and something small to eat. It’s an easy, practical stop on the way down toward the coast — a good place to sit for 30–45 minutes, check messages, and regroup before the busier part of the day. From here, it’s roughly a 20–30 minute drive to Santa Monica depending on traffic, so this is the moment to mentally switch from museum pace to beach pace.

Afternoon to Evening

Spend the next stretch at Santa Monica Pier for the classic postcard version of LA: ocean breeze, street performers, families, and the easy chaos of the boardwalk. You don’t need much structure here — just stroll, watch the water, maybe grab a quick snack, and enjoy the people-watching. Then make your way to Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery for lunch or an early dinner; the line can move slowly, but it’s worth it for one of their massive sandwiches, and budget roughly $15–25 per person. After that, head over to the Venice Canals for a calmer sunset walk. It’s a totally different mood from the pier — quieter, residential, a little dreamy — and the light over the water is usually lovely in the evening. Finish on Abbot Kinney Boulevard, where the walkable stretch between Venice Boulevard and the surrounding blocks gives you plenty of options for dessert, a drink, or just a relaxed wander through shops and galleries. If you still have energy, this is the best place to linger without feeling like you need an agenda.
