Evening Arrival

Start by checking in at The Godfrey Hotel Chicago in River North and getting your bags out of the way so the night feels easy from the start. If you’re coming in by rideshare or CTA, this is a very convenient base: you’re close to the nightlife, but still only a quick walk or short ride from the river and the Loop. Expect check-in to take about 45 minutes all in, and if you arrive earlier than the room is ready, the front desk is usually good about holding luggage so you can head out without dragging it around.

Dinner and First Chicago Bite

For a low-key first meal, go to Portillo’s Hot Dogs (River North) and keep it simple: a Chicago-style hot dog, Italian beef if you’re hungry, or a chopped salad if you want something lighter. It’s casual, fast, and very much a “welcome to Chicago” kind of stop, with dinner running about an hour and roughly $15–25 per person. If the line looks long, don’t panic — it moves quickly — and the whole point tonight is not to overplan, just to get a classic Chicago dinner and settle into the city’s rhythm.

Walk It Off Along the River

After dinner, head down to the Chicago Riverwalk for an easy post-meal stroll. This is one of the best ways to absorb downtown on your first night: the water, the bridges, the towers, and the mix of office-district quiet and city glow all make more sense when you’re on foot. From River North, it’s a straightforward walk south and west, and in April you’ll want a light jacket because the river breeze can feel colder than the streets do. Give yourself about an hour here, moving at a lazy pace and stopping for photos whenever the skyline opens up.

Finish with the Classic Lights

Continue south to the Wrigley Building and then on to the Chicago Theatre for the final stretch of the night. The Wrigley Building is especially worth a quick look after dark, when the white facade pops against the skyline, and it only takes about 20 minutes to admire from the sidewalk and take a few photos. From there, the Chicago Theatre gives you that classic downtown payoff — the big marquee, the old-school glamour, the “yes, I’m really in Chicago” feeling. It’s only about a 10–15 minute walk or a very short rideshare between these stops and back toward your hotel, so keep the pace relaxed and let the city do the work.
