Morning

Start in Sultanahmet Square to get your bearings in the historic core: this is the best place to understand how the old city is laid out, with Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapı Palace all within an easy walk. Give yourself 30–45 minutes to wander, take in the obelisks and fountains, and maybe grab a tea from a nearby kiosk. Since it’s a Sunday and you’re here in June, it’ll already be lively by late morning, so go early enough to avoid the heaviest crowds.

Next, head straight into Hagia Sophia. Expect about 1–1.5 hours here, especially if you want time to absorb the scale and linger under the main dome. Dress modestly, arrive with shoulders and knees covered, and be prepared for security screening and possible short queues; entry rules and visitation flow can change, so it’s worth checking the current setup before you go. After that, walk next door to the Blue Mosque for around 45 minutes. The transition is easy and the contrast is part of the fun: one is monumental and layered with history, the other is elegant, serene, and still very much a working mosque. Women should bring a head covering, and both places are best visited with a little patience and a quiet attitude.

Lunch

For lunch, stop at Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi Selim Usta, one of those old-school places that does one thing well. Order the grilled köfte with rice, piyaz, and ayran; it’s simple, filling, and usually lands in the $10–20 range per person depending on what you add. Service is fast, which is perfect for a sightseeing day, and you’ll probably be seated and done within 45–60 minutes. If the main room is full, don’t stress—turnover is usually quick in this part of town.

Afternoon Exploring

Spend the afternoon at Topkapı Palace, and don’t rush it. Plan for 2–2.5 hours minimum, more if you’re the kind of traveler who likes courtyards, tiled rooms, and museum cases packed with imperial treasures. The palace complex is huge, so focus on the main courtyards, the treasury, and the imperial quarters if time is tight. Tickets can be pricey compared with other stops in the neighborhood, and certain sections may have separate admission or timed entry, so it’s worth checking before you line up. Comfortable shoes matter here—the grounds are uneven in places and you’ll be on your feet more than you think.

Evening

Wrap up at Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar) in Eminönü, which is a perfect late-afternoon sensory hit after the calm of the palace. Give it 45–60 minutes to browse saffron, tea, Turkish delight, dried fruits, nuts, and small souvenir packs; prices vary a lot, so compare a few stalls before buying, and don’t be shy about politely bargaining a little on packaged goods. From Topkapı Palace, it’s an easy taxi ride or a pleasant downhill walk toward Eminönü if you want to stretch your legs. If you have time before heading back, the waterfront around the Galata Bridge is a lovely place to pause for a tea and watch the ferries, especially as the light softens over the Golden Horn.
