Varanasi to Delhi Travel Itinerary

Day 1 · Tue, Jun 30
Delhi

Arrival in Delhi

  1. Varanasi to Delhi flight — Varanasi Airport (VNS) to Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) — take an early-evening flight if available, ~1.5–2 hours in the air plus airport time; plan to arrive late evening and use a pre-booked cab or metro from the airport into central Delhi.
  2. Connaught Place — Central Delhi — a low-effort first stop for a post-arrival wander, with colonial architecture, lively streets, and easy access to dinner; evening, ~1 hour.
  3. Indian Coffee House — Connaught Place — a classic, budget-friendly Delhi institution for a simple North Indian meal or coffee; dinner, ~45–60 minutes, about ₹200–500 per person.
  4. Janpath Market — Connaught Place area — good for an easy first-night browse of handicrafts and souvenirs without going far from dinner; evening, ~45 minutes.
  5. Jantar Mantar — Connaught Place — an iconic astronomical site that is best seen from the outside at night if you’re too tired for a full stop, but still worth a quick look on the way back; evening, ~20–30 minutes.

Arrival into Delhi

Take the Varanasi to Delhi flight from Varanasi Airport (VNS) to Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) as early in the evening as you can get it — that’s the least exhausting way to land and still have a little life left in you. The flight is usually about 1.5–2 hours, but build in extra time for airport security, boarding, and the usual Delhi arrival shuffle. If you’re landing after dark, pre-book a cab from the airport is the smoothest option; expect roughly 45–60 minutes into central Delhi depending on traffic and which terminal you arrive at. The Delhi Metro Airport Express is faster and cheaper if you’re light on luggage and arriving at a convenient hour, but for a first night, a cab is just easier.

Easy first evening in Central Delhi

Head straight to Connaught Place, because it’s the right kind of easy after a travel day: open, walkable, familiar, and full of energy without being overwhelming. The outer circle is especially nice for a slow loop under the colonnades, with the old colonial geometry lit up at night and enough movement to make you feel like you’ve arrived in a real city. Keep this light — one relaxed hour is enough. From most central hotels or airport-drop points, it’s a short cab ride, and if you’re staying nearby you can even walk the last stretch. After that, settle into Indian Coffee House for dinner; it’s one of those old-school Delhi institutions where the food is simple, cheap, and reliably filling. Think ₹200–500 per person, and don’t expect polished service — expect charm, nostalgia, and a very local crowd.

Quick browse before calling it

If you still have some energy, wander over to Janpath Market for an easy first-night browse. It’s the kind of place where you can pick up scarves, earrings, books, handicrafts, and random souvenir finds without committing to a full shopping mission. In the evening it’s lively but manageable, and because it sits right by Connaught Place, you won’t waste time in transit. Keep an eye on your bargaining — start low, stay friendly, and don’t feel pressured to buy. On your way back, take a quick look at Jantar Mantar from the outside if you’re passing by; after dark it’s more of a silhouette and a landmark than a full visit, but it’s still worth 20–30 minutes just to mark it on the map. Most of the area stays active until late, so you can wind down at your hotel without rushing.
