4-Day Shoestring Budget Itinerary for Sikkim

  1. Day 1: Gangtok
    10 minutes (1.3 miles) from Gangtok Bus Stand

    In the morning, visit the Enchey Monastery, which dates back to the 1900s and is famous for its architecture and annual Chaam dance. In the afternoon, explore Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, which has a library with rare manuscripts and a museum with a collection of Tibetan artifacts. In the evening, stroll through M.G. Marg and enjoy local street food and shopping.

  2. Day 2: Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass
    2 hours (31.9 miles) from Gangtok

    In the morning, head to Tsomgo Lake, a serene glacial lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains. After that, visit Nathula Pass, a historic trade route and border between India and China. In the evening, return to Gangtok and relax at one of the local tea houses.

  3. Day 3: Pelling
    5 hours (70.4 miles) from Gangtok

    In the morning, visit the Kanchenjunga Falls and Rimbi Waterfall, both located near Pelling. After that, explore the Pemayangtse Monastery, which dates back to the 1700s and has a collection of ancient Buddhist scriptures. In the evening, enjoy a stunning sunset view from the Sangay Waterfall.

  4. Day 4: Yuksom
    2 hours (30.2 miles) from Pelling

    In the morning, visit the Dubdi Monastery, the oldest monastery in Sikkim which dates back to 1701. After that, hike to the Khecheopalri Lake, which is considered a sacred lake by Buddhists and has clear water. In the evening, return to Pelling and visit the Rabdentse Ruins, which is a former capital of Sikkim and has interesting architecture.

Other local attractions worth visiting are the Rumtek Monastery, the Tashiding Monastery, and the Yuksom Coronation Throne. You can also take a side trip to the Darjeeling tea plantations or the Khangchendzonga National Park. To maximize your fun, try local Sikkimese cuisine such as momos, thukpa, and gundruk soup.
