Kedarnath - 5 Day Family Friendly Itinerary in September 2023

  1. Day 1: Kedarnath Temple
    Located in Kedarnath
    Walking distance from most hotels

    In the morning, visit the famous Kedarnath Temple which is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and is a sight to behold. Afternoon can be spent exploring the nearby market selling woollen clothes, handicrafts and souvenirs. In the evening, attend the aarti ceremony at the temple, which is a deeply spiritual and enchanting experience.

  2. Day 2: Gandhi Sarovar
    32.8 km (1 hr 30 mins) from Kedarnath

    In the morning, take a scenic drive to Gandhi Sarovar, a beautiful lake surrounded by majestic mountains. It is said that Mahatma Gandhi used to drink water from this lake which makes it a popular attraction. In the afternoon, take a short trek to Vasuki Tal, a serene lake located at an altitude of 4,150 metres. In the evening, return to Kedarnath for dinner and relaxation.

  3. Day 3: Triyuginarayan Temple
    25.2 km (1 hr 20 mins) from Kedarnath

    In the morning, visit the Triyuginarayan Temple, famous for being the location where Lord Shiva and Parvati got married. The temple is surrounded by natural beauty and offers breathtaking views of the mountains. In the afternoon, visit Gaurikund, a natural hot spring which is believed to have medicinal properties. In the evening, return to Kedarnath for dinner and relaxation.

  4. Day 4: Sonprayag
    20.5 km (1 hr) from Kedarnath

    In the morning, take a scenic drive to Sonprayag, a picturesque town located at the confluence of two rivers. It is believed that taking a dip in the holy waters of Sonprayag can wash away sins. In the afternoon, visit the ancient Triyugi Narayan temple and learn about its interesting history. In the evening, return to Kedarnath for dinner and relaxation.

  5. Day 5: Kedar Dome Peak
    35.3 km (2 hrs) from Kedarnath

    In the morning, take a trek to Kedar Dome Peak, a beautiful mountain peak located at an altitude of 6,831 metres. The trek can be challenging, but the stunning views of the mountains and valleys are worth it. In the afternoon, visit Shankaracharya Samadhi, a sacred site dedicated to the great Indian philosopher and theologian Shankaracharya. In the evening, return to Kedarnath for a farewell dinner.

Recommendations

Other local attractions that are worth visiting include the Bhairav Nath Temple, Guptkashi, and the Chandrashila Peak. For a side trip, you can visit the nearby town of Badrinath which is home to the famous Badrinath Temple. To maximize your fun, try some local delicacies like Kachmauli, Bal Mithai, and Singori. Don't forget to carry warm clothes as it can get quite cold in the mountains at night.
