Munich City Break

Day 1 · Wed, Aug 19
Munich

Exploring Munich

  1. Marienplatz — Altstadt; begin with Munich’s central square, Neues Rathaus, and the famous Glockenspiel, morning, ~45 minutes.
  2. Viktualienmarkt — Altstadt; browse Bavarian produce, cheeses, sausages, and beer-garden stalls for a relaxed lunch, late morning–early afternoon, ~1.5 hours, approximately €15–25 per person.
  3. Munich Residenz — Altstadt; explore the former royal palace’s richly decorated rooms and treasury, early afternoon, ~2 hours.
  4. English Garden — Schwabing/Lehel; walk through one of Europe’s largest urban parks and watch surfers at the Eisbachwelle, mid-afternoon, ~2 hours.
  5. Hofbräuhaus München — Altstadt; finish with classic Bavarian dishes, beer, and lively traditional atmosphere, evening, ~1.5–2 hours, approximately €25–40 per person.

Morning

Start at Marienplatz around 9:00, before the square becomes busiest. Take in the Neues Rathaus façade and its Glockenspiel; the main performances are at 11:00 and 12:00, with an additional 17:00 performance in summer. Allow about 45 minutes, then walk roughly five minutes to Viktualienmarkt. This is the ideal time to browse the produce, cheese, sausage, and bakery stalls before lunch crowds build. Settle at one of the beer-garden tables for a casual meal—budget around €15–25 per person. Most stalls operate from morning into the afternoon, though individual closing times vary; the market is generally quietest on weekday mornings.

Afternoon

From Viktualienmarkt, walk north through the Altstadt to the Munich Residenz in about 10 minutes. Give yourself close to two hours for the palace rooms, Antiquarium, and Treasury; the museum is typically open daily from 9:00 to 18:00 in summer, with last admission earlier, and the combined admission is usually around €10–15 depending on the areas selected. Afterward, continue toward the English Garden—either walk 15–20 minutes via Odeonsplatz or take the U-Bahn from Odeonsplatz toward Universität, then enter the park near the Eisbachwelle. Watch the surfers from the riverbank rather than approaching the water, then stroll north through the shaded paths for an unhurried couple of hours. The park is free and open around the clock, but comfortable shoes are worthwhile.

Evening

Return from the southern end of the English Garden to Hofbräuhaus München in about 20 minutes on foot, or use the U-Bahn via Odeonsplatz and Marienplatz. Arrive around 18:30–19:00 for a better chance of finding a table before the liveliest evening period. Order Bavarian classics such as roast pork, sausages, or käsespätzle with a Maß of beer; expect roughly €25–40 per person. It is deliberately touristy but still fun when approached as a grand beer-hall experience—sit in the main hall for the music and atmosphere, or ask for a quieter table if you prefer conversation.
