Day 1 · Mon, Sep 28
Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Taj Mahal and Agra Fort

  1. Taj Mahal — Taj Ganj; arrive around sunrise for softer light and time to explore the mausoleum and gardens (~2.5 hours).
  2. Joney’s Place — Taj Ganj; take a relaxed breakfast at this well-known, casual spot near the Taj (~45 minutes; approx. ₹300–700 per person).
  3. Agra Fort — Rakabganj; explore the Mughal palaces, courtyards, and views across the river (~2 hours).
  4. Pinch of Spice — Sanjay Place; pause for a sit-down North Indian lunch before heading east (~1 hour; approx. ₹600–1,200 per person).
  5. Itimad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj) — Moti Bagh; visit this intricate riverside tomb, often considered a precursor to the Taj Mahal (~1 hour).
  6. Mehtab Bagh — across the Yamuna from the Taj; finish with sunset views of the monument from the garden (~1 hour).

Sunrise at the Taj

Head to the Taj Mahal in Taj Ganj for opening time—sunrise is around 6 a.m. in late September, but check the official ticketing site for the day’s exact entry time and buy tickets ahead if you can. The monument is closed on Fridays. Allow about 2½ hours for the gardens, marble mausoleum and changing morning light; expect airport-style security, and leave food, tobacco and large bags behind. Admission is roughly ₹50 for Indian visitors or ₹1,100 for foreign visitors, with an additional fee to enter the mausoleum. Afterward, walk or take a short e-rickshaw ride to Joney’s Place for an easy, relaxed breakfast; budget around ₹300–700 per person.

Fort and lunch

Take an auto-rickshaw or cab about 15–20 minutes to Agra Fort in Rakabganj. Give yourself roughly two hours for its courtyards and palaces, and look out for the Taj across the river from the fort’s northern side. It’s open daily from about sunrise to sunset; entry is around ₹50 for Indian visitors and ₹650 for foreign visitors, though fees can change. From here, a cab to Pinch of Spice in Sanjay Place takes roughly 15–25 minutes, depending on traffic. Settle in for a North Indian lunch—allow an hour and about ₹600–1,200 per person.

Afternoon along the Yamuna

After lunch, continue by cab to Itimad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj) in Moti Bagh, around 20–30 minutes away. This smaller riverside tomb is a lovely change of scale: take time with the pietra dura inlay and delicate details, and allow about an hour. It generally opens from sunrise to sunset; admission is usually around ₹30 for Indian visitors and ₹310 for foreign visitors. Ask your driver to wait or arrange a pickup before you leave, as rides can be less readily available here.

Sunset across the river

Finish at Mehtab Bagh, across the Yamuna from the Taj, for the sunset view. From Baby Taj, allow roughly 20–30 minutes by cab; check sunset time and arrive a little early to enjoy the garden before the light fades. The garden usually closes around sunset, and entry is typically about ₹30 for Indian visitors and ₹300 for foreign visitors. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and keep a little cash for small purchases or an e-rickshaw ride.
