Kottayam to Munnar Hill Getaway by Car

Day 1
Munnar

Evening Drive to Munnar

  1. Hotel Aida (Kottayam town) — Have an early meal before the longer hill drive, with a typical meal around ₹300–₹700 per person — early evening, ~45 minutes.
  2. Kanjirappally (Kottayam district) — Pass through here on the main route towards the hills and take a brief break only if needed — evening, ~15 minutes.
  3. Kuttikkanam (Idukki district) — Enjoy the cooler hill air as the road climbs, but avoid stopping at viewpoints after dark — evening, drive-through.
  4. Peermade (Idukki district) — Continue along the winding hill road towards Kumily, allowing extra time if there is rain or mist — evening, drive-through.
  5. Kumily town (Thekkady) — Pick up water or snacks if shops are open before heading to your stay — late evening, ~10 minutes.
  6. Thekkady accommodation check-in (Thekkady) — Settle in for the night; choose a stay with on-site dining or confirm food arrangements in advance — late evening, ~30 minutes.

Early evening: Kottayam to the hills

For a different cool-climate destination, head to Thekkady, staying in or near Kumily. Have an early dinner at Hotel Aida in Kottayam, then allow roughly 4–5 hours for the drive via Kanjirappally, Kuttikkanam and Peermade. Traffic, rain and the winding final stretch can add time, so don’t plan on reaching before late evening.

Hill road and arrival

The climb past Kuttikkanam and Peermade is scenic by day, but after dark focus on the road rather than stopping at viewpoints. Drive slowly through bends and be especially cautious in mist or rain. Once in Kumily, make only a quick stop for essentials if shops are open; late-night options can be limited.

Check in at your Thekkady accommodation and have dinner there if available. Confirm food arrangements before leaving Kottayam, and keep water and snacks in the car.

Day 2
Munnar

Explore Munnar and Return to Kottayam

  1. Periyar Tiger Reserve (Thekkady) — Take a boat ride on Periyar Lake for forest views and a chance to spot wildlife; book ahead and allow 2–3 hours.
  2. Spice garden in Kumily (Kumily) — Learn about the spices grown in the hills on a guided garden walk; allow about an hour.
  3. Local restaurant in Kumily (Kumily) — Have a relaxed Kerala lunch before the return drive; budget roughly ₹250–₹600 per person.
  4. Kadathanadan Kalari Centre (Thekkady) — Catch a performance of Kerala’s martial art, kalaripayattu, if a show fits your schedule; allow about an hour.
  5. Thekkady–Kottayam drive via Kanjirappally — Leave by mid-afternoon and allow roughly 3–4 hours, with extra time for winding roads and traffic.

Morning

Spend the morning at Periyar Tiger Reserve, starting with a boat ride on Periyar Lake. It’s a relaxing way to see the forested hills, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Boat seats can sell out, so check the reserve’s official booking options in advance and arrive with time to spare. Allow around 2–3 hours for the boat trip and arrival formalities; bring a light jacket, as the lake can feel cool.

Afterwards, drive a short distance to a spice garden around Kumily for a guided walk. These visits usually take about an hour and are a good introduction to the cardamom, pepper and other crops of the region. Confirm the garden’s current visiting arrangements locally before setting off.

Lunch and early afternoon

Have lunch at a local restaurant in Kumily; a simple meal or curry with rice is typically around ₹250–₹600 per person. Keep the stop unhurried but don’t let it run too late—the return to Kottayam is a winding drive, and you’ll want to leave by mid-afternoon.

If the timing works, stop at Kadathanadan Kalari Centre for a kalaripayattu performance. Check the current show schedule before planning around it, since performance times can vary. If there isn’t a suitable show, use the time for a relaxed wander through Kumily instead.

Afternoon: return to Kottayam

Set off by about 2:00–3:00 PM for Kottayam via Kanjirappally. Allow roughly 3–4 hours, more if it’s raining or traffic is slow on the hill roads, so you should reach Kottayam in the evening. Take a short break if needed, and avoid rushing on the winding sections.
