Travel from Jammu to Katra by road, allowing about 1.5–2.5 hours door to door; traffic, your pickup point and any stop can stretch that. A late-morning or early-afternoon departure leaves time to check in and sort out pilgrimage formalities before evening. Taxis and buses run the route, but agree on a taxi fare before setting off. In Katra, check the latest Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board instructions and arrange your required yatra registration/RFID access before heading to the track; keep your ID handy and don’t assume same-day access without checking availability.
After dropping your bags, take it easy at Shalimar Park for around 45 minutes. It’s a pleasant place for a gentle stroll and a breather after the drive, rather than a day for strenuous sightseeing. Then wander through Katra Main Bazaar for about an hour: you’ll find snacks, walking sticks, rain covers and other pilgrimage basics. Compare prices, and avoid buying more than you want to carry on the trek.
Have a simple meal at Pooja Vaishno Dhaba—budget roughly ₹200–₹500 per person—and turn in early. Keep tomorrow’s essentials together, including your registration details, ID, comfortable shoes and a light layer; October evenings can feel cooler than the daytime. Check the latest yatra and weather advisories before bed, since operating arrangements can change.
Have an early vegetarian breakfast at Sagar Ratna in Katra—budget about ₹250–₹600 per person—then set out for Banganga, the traditional starting point of the walk. Complete the required yatra registration before you begin and allow extra time for security checks and queues; carry your registration details and a light layer, as it can feel cooler on the climb. Follow the signed pilgrim route uphill rather than trying to rush the first stretch.
Continue to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan in the Trikuta Hills. The climb, security process, darshan queues and descent can take several hours, and the total round trip commonly fills much of the day. Helicopter or other assistance is only an option if booked in advance and confirmed under the current rules; availability and weather can disrupt plans, so don’t build your Jammu return around it.
If you still have the energy and enough time, continue above the Bhawan to Bhairon Temple, then descend to Katra. Be realistic about fatigue and the clock: this is a demanding pilgrimage day, and skipping the extra climb is sensible if you need to make an evening road transfer.
Once back in Katra, travel to Jammu by road, allowing about 1.5–2.5 hours door to door; the late arrival may be later still if the descent, queues or traffic run long. Leave only after you have returned to Katra, and arrange your pickup in advance rather than assuming a car will be immediately available. For a more dependable schedule—and a less exhausting finish—stay another night in Katra and travel to Jammu the following day.
