Bengaluru to Udupi and Coastal Karnataka Pilgrimage Route

Day 1 · Tue, Oct 20
Udupi

Udupi and Kundapura

  1. Bengaluru to Udupi by road — Allow about 8–10 hours door to door, including breaks; leave around 4:00–5:00 AM and confirm your route and parking before setting out.
  2. Sri Krishna Matha — Udupi town; visit the revered temple and allow around 1–2 hours, with extra time for queues and darshan.
  3. Mitra Samaj — Near Sri Krishna Matha; enjoy a classic Udupi snack or meal, roughly ₹100–₹250 per person.
  4. Anegudde Sri Vinayaka Temple — Kumbashi, near Kundapura; stop at this well-known Ganapati temple for about 45–60 minutes.
  5. Kodi Beach — Kundapura; unwind by the coast for about an hour, ideally around sunset, then continue to your overnight stay.

Early morning — Bengaluru to Udupi

Leave Bengaluru around 4:00–5:00 AM for Udupi, usually via Hassan and the Shiradi Ghat section of NH 75. Allow 8–10 hours door to door, including breakfast, fuel and traffic breaks; ghat conditions and roadworks can stretch the drive, so check the route before setting off. On arrival, park near Sri Krishna Matha and allow 1–2 hours for darshan, with extra time for queues. Temple timings can vary and there is typically a midday break, so check the current darshan schedule before you leave Bengaluru—if you reach during the closure, you may have to wait for the evening opening.

Lunch and afternoon — Udupi to Kundapura

Just steps from the temple, Mitra Samaj is a local favourite for Udupi snacks and a simple meal; budget roughly ₹100–₹250 per person. Then drive about 30–40 km north to Anegudde Sri Vinayaka Temple in Kumbashi, allowing 45–60 minutes for your visit. Keep some slack for town traffic and temple queues; a taxi or hired car is much more practical than trying to fit these stops around bus connections.

Evening — Kodi Beach

Continue to Kodi Beach near Kundapura to unwind by the coast; allow about an hour and check the sunset time for your date. One practical snag: this is a very full day after the long drive from Bengaluru. If Sri Krishna Matha darshan falls during its midday closure and you wait for the evening session, reaching Anegudde Sri Vinayaka Temple and Kodi Beach before sunset may not be realistic. To keep every planned stop without rushing, consider staying overnight near Kundapura and visiting Kodi Beach the following morning; check beach conditions locally and avoid swimming in rough surf.

Day 2 · Wed, Oct 21
Kukke Subramanya

Dharmasthala, Southadka, and Kukke Subramanya

Getting there from Udupi
Hire a car with driver for the day (about 4–5 hours of driving direct, roughly 150 km; approximately ₹4,500–₹7,000 for a full-day hire). Since your plan includes Dharmasthala and Southadka en route, leave around 4:00 AM and travel via Karkala and Dharmasthala. Book through a local Udupi taxi operator or compare providers on MakeMyTrip/Goibibo; confirm that the fare includes the stops.
  1. Udupi to Dharmasthala by road — Leave around 4:00 AM; allow roughly 2–3 hours, depending on the route and conditions.
  2. Sri Manjunatha Swamy Temple — Dharmasthala; allow at least 1.5–2.5 hours for darshan and queues; check current temple arrangements before you travel.
  3. Southadka Sri Mahaganapathi Temple — Near Kokkada; allow around 45–60 minutes for this distinctive open-air shrine.
  4. Lunch near Kukke Subramanya — Choose a local vegetarian restaurant near the temple; budget about ₹150–₹350 per person and allow around 45 minutes.
  5. Kukke Subramanya Temple — Subramanya; allow 1.5–2.5 hours for darshan and queues; any special sevas or rituals may require advance booking and are subject to availability.
  6. Kukke Subramanya to Bengaluru by road — Leave by early afternoon if possible; allow roughly 6–8 hours, including breaks. This is a very long day after three temple visits; an overnight stay near Kukke or reducing the temple stops would make the return more manageable.

Before dawn

Leave Udupi around 4:00 AM in your pre-booked car; the drive to Dharmasthala is roughly 2–3 hours, but allow extra time for road conditions and a quick tea stop. Confirm with the driver that the fare covers both temple stops and the onward journey to Kukke Subramanya. At Sri Manjunatha Swamy Temple, allow 1.5–2.5 hours for darshan and queues. Temple arrangements can change, so check current entry procedures before setting out; arrive modestly dressed and keep some flexibility in the schedule.

Late morning and lunch

Continue to Southadka Sri Mahaganapathi Temple near Kokkada, a distinctive open-air shrine; budget about 45–60 minutes, including the drive and time at the temple. Then head to Kukke Subramanya for a simple vegetarian lunch near the temple—allow around 45 minutes and roughly ₹150–₹350 per person. Hotel Sri Krishna is one convenient local option; check what is open when you arrive.

Afternoon and return

Allow 1.5–2.5 hours at Kukke Subramanya Temple for darshan and queues. Special sevas or rituals may need advance booking and are subject to availability, so don’t build the plan around getting a same-day slot. This is a very long day: with both earlier visits, lunch and darshan, leaving for Bengaluru by early afternoon is unlikely. The drive back via Sakleshpur and Hassan can take 6–8 hours with breaks; expect a late arrival, and avoid pushing on if the driver is tired. The more comfortable choice is an overnight stay near Kukke Subramanya and a fresh start for the return journey.
