Coorg Itinerary for August 2023

  1. Day 1: Abbey Falls
20 minutes (8.5 km) from Madikeri

Abbey Falls is a picturesque waterfall tucked away in the Western Ghats. The view of the waterfall surrounded by lush greenery is a sight to behold. You can hear the falls before you see them, and the sound of the cascading water is quite mesmerizing. You can take a short trek to reach the falls from the parking area. The walk is easy and surrounded by beautiful plantations and dense forests. The best time to visit the falls is during the monsoon season when the waterfall is in full force.

  2. Day 2: Dubare Elephant Camp
1 hour 30 minutes (60 km) from Abbey Falls

Dubare Elephant Camp is a unique experience where you get to interact with trained elephants. You can watch them being bathed, fed, and even take a ride on them. The camp is set in a pristine forest reserve, which makes for a beautiful setting. You can also go for a coracle ride on the river Cauvery nearby. The camp offers a glimpse into the life of the majestic elephants that are an intrinsic part of Coorg's culture.

  3. Day 3: Talakaveri
2 hours 30 minutes (85 km) from Dubare Elephant Camp

Talakaveri is the birthplace of the river Cauvery, one of the most sacred rivers in India. It is located at the foothills of the Brahmagiri range. You can climb the steps to reach the source of the river, which is marked by a small pond. The view from the top is breathtaking, and you can see the Western Ghats stretching for miles. There is a temple dedicated to Goddess Cauvery, and the place is considered holy by the locals.

Recommendations

If you're looking for a bit of adventure, you can try trekking in the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to many rare species of flora and fauna. The Nalknad Palace, built-in 1792, is a beautiful example of Coorg's architecture and is worth a visit. For coffee lovers, a visit to the coffee plantations in Coorg is a must. You can also go on a night safari in the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary to catch a glimpse of the nocturnal wildlife. To make the most of your trip, it is recommended to hire a local guide who can take you to offbeat places and give you a glimpse of Coorg's rich culture.
