Reach Sealdah Station around 11:00 AM, ideally by app cab or taxi with extra time for Kolkata traffic and the busy station approach. Keep your e-ticket, photo ID, and coach details easily accessible; porters are available, but agree on the price before handing over luggage. Once inside, check the coach-position display and the IRCTC app for any platform or schedule change—long-distance trains can be reassigned at short notice. With a 1:10 PM departure, this leaves comfortable time for security checks, finding the platform, and boarding without rushing.
Buy lunch shortly before boarding or from the station vendors near Sealdah Station—a packed biryani, rice-and-dal meal, or simple rolls usually costs about ₹150–₹400 per person. Carry at least one large bottle of sealed water, dry snacks, tissues, and basic medicines, since onboard catering and pantry availability can vary. Board the Humsafar Express well before departure, confirm your berth and luggage placement, and keep valuables in a small day bag rather than in the larger luggage.
After the 1:10 PM departure, settle into the reserved berth and keep the first afternoon fairly easy. This is a very long rail journey, so download entertainment, carry a power bank, and use station stops for quick stretching rather than wandering far from the coach. Before nightfall, verify the ticket’s final destination—often Jammu Tawi or another railhead rather than Kashmir Valley itself. Trains generally do not take passengers directly into the Valley, so an onward road transfer to Srinagar may need to be arranged separately, with several additional hours allowed after arrival. Expect the full rail-and-road journey to require more than one travel day; do not plan sightseeing in Kashmir immediately after getting off the train.
