One-Day Udupi and Malpe Sightseeing Trip from Kaup

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Udupi, Karnataka

Udupi heritage, coast, and Malpe beach

  1. Kaup → Udupi → Malpe route — Kaup to Udupi takes about 25–35 minutes, then another 15–20 minutes to Malpe. Depart around 1:00 PM; drive or hire an auto/taxi, allowing time for parking and traffic.
  2. Udupi Sri Krishna Matha surroundings — Udupi town, ~1 hour. See the historic temple complex from the exterior and explore nearby heritage streets; temple entry is optional and subject to current access rules.
  3. Woodlands Restaurant — Udupi town, ~45 minutes. Reliable local vegetarian lunch or early meal; budget approximately ₹200–₹400 per person.
  4. Malpe Beach — Malpe, ~1.5 hours in the afternoon. Relax on the broad sandy shore and enjoy sunset views; avoid swimming in rough surf and check local safety flags.
  5. Malpe Harbour and fishing area — Malpe, ~45 minutes. Watch fishing boats return and experience the working coastal waterfront; stay in public areas and avoid restricted docks.
  6. Malpe → Kaup — Return by road, about 35–50 minutes. Leave around 6:30 PM; consider a brief stop at Kaup Beach near home if daylight and conditions allow.

Afternoon: Kaup to Udupi

Leave Kaup around 1:00 PM by car, taxi, or auto-rickshaw via NH66; allow about 25–35 minutes to Udupi, plus another 15–20 minutes onward to Malpe. Since you are covering both town and coast, drive first to central Udupi and use a paid parking area near the market or temple surroundings rather than trying to park immediately beside the entrance.

Begin at the exterior and surrounding heritage lanes of Udupi Sri Krishna Matha for about an hour. Even without temple entry, the streets around the matha are lively and atmospheric, with traditional houses, small shops, and local snack stalls. Access rules and queues can change, so treat entry as optional rather than guaranteed. Have an early lunch at Woodlands Restaurant, a dependable vegetarian choice in Udupi; allow 45 minutes and roughly ₹200–₹400 per person for dosa, meals, coffee, or sweets. From here, continue by road to Malpe.

Afternoon and Evening: Malpe

Spend about 1½ hours at Malpe Beach, where the wide sandy shoreline is best enjoyed with a relaxed walk and a little time watching the Arabian Sea. Swimming is not advisable unless lifeguards indicate safe conditions—currents can be strong, and flags or local instructions should be taken seriously. Afterward, spend around 45 minutes at Malpe Harbour and fishing area, staying in public visitor areas and clear of restricted working docks. Late afternoon is a good time to see boats returning and observe the busier, more authentic side of the coast; avoid blocking loading areas or photographing fishermen at close range without permission.

Return to Kaup

Leave Malpe around 6:30 PM for Kaup, allowing approximately 35–50 minutes depending on traffic. Take the usual road back through Udupi and onward to Kaup; keep some flexibility for evening congestion near town. If there is still daylight and the sea conditions are calm, finish with a brief stop at Kaup Beach before heading back. Carry cash for parking, snacks, and small harbour purchases, and note that boat rides or beach activities—if offered—depend on weather, season, and operator availability.
