3-Day Shoestring Budget Itinerary for Wayanad in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Chembra Peak
    1 hour 20 minutes (30.9 km) from Kalpetta

    Begin your day with a refreshing trek to the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek to the top takes approximately 3-4 hours and offers an incredible view of the heart-shaped Chembra Lake. Spend the afternoon exploring the nearby tea plantations and enjoy a relaxing stroll amidst the lush greenery. End your day with a visit to the Pookode Lake, surrounded by hills and covered by forests. Boating is available here for a small fee.

  2. Day 2: Banasura Sagar Dam
    46 minutes (20.2 km) from Kalpetta

    Start your day with a visit to the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earth dam in India. The dam is surrounded by lush green hills and offers amazing views of the Banasura Sagar reservoir. You can opt for a speed boat ride, visit the nearby park or simply unwind with a picnic by the reservoir. In the afternoon, visit the Edakkal Caves, a prehistoric rock shelter that contains ancient petroglyphs. A moderate hike of approximately 1.5 km is required to reach the caves.   3. Day 3: Thirunelli Temple

    Start your day with a visit to the Thirunelli Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu. The temple is located amidst the Brahmagiri Hills and is surrounded by lush greenery. Afterward, visit the nearby Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary, a trekker's paradise, filled with hills, caves, and diverse flora and fauna. The trek takes approximately 2-3 hours, and a guide is mandatory. In the evening, visit the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, home to a variety of animals such as elephants, tigers, leopards, and deer. Take a jeep safari through the sanctuary and spot these incredible animals in their natural habitat.
