Two Days in Amritsar

  1. Day 1: Golden Temple
10 minutes (3.2 km) from Amritsar Junction Railway Station

Start your day early with a visit to Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib. The temple is the holiest shrine for the Sikh religion and is a symbol of devotion and purity. Witness the morning prayer ceremony and the beautiful reflection of the temple in the water. Try the langar, a free meal served to all visitors in the temple premises. In the afternoon, visit Jallianwala Bagh, a public garden that bears witness to the tragic Amritsar massacre of 1919. Spend the evening at the Wagah Border, located about 30 km from the city, to watch the flag lowering ceremony between India and Pakistan.

  2. Day 2: Partition Museum and Gobindgarh Fort
15 minutes (4.1 km) from Golden Temple

Start your day at the Partition Museum, located in the Town Hall building, which is dedicated to the Partition of India in 1947. The museum features a collection of photographs, personal stories, and artifacts that depict the trauma and the aftermath of the division. In the afternoon, visit the Gobindgarh Fort, which is a former military fort and palace. The fort has been redeveloped into a cultural and entertainment hub that features light and sound shows, live performances, and exhibitions. Spend the evening shopping and dining at Lawrence Road, which is the main commercial hub of the city.

Recommendations

If you have time, visit the Durgiana Temple, which is a Hindu temple located about 2 km from the Golden Temple. You can also take a day trip to the Pul Kanjari village, located about 35 km from the city, which was a rest stop for Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The village has a historical gurudwara and a baoli (step-well) that was used by the soldiers. To maximize your fun, try the local street food such as kulchas, chole bhature, and lassi. Do not forget to buy souvenirs such as phulkari embroidery, juttis (traditional footwear), and Amritsari papad. If you need any assistance with booking hotels and flights, you can use this link.
