10 Days in Spain: Exploring the Canary Islands and the Best of Madrid

  • Day 1: Madrid
    15 minutes (6.7 km) from the airport to the city center.

    After arriving in Madrid, head to Plaza Mayor, a popular attraction where you can see the beautiful architecture of the city. Then, make your way to Museo Nacional del Prado, one of the most visited museums in the world. Finish the day with a relaxing evening at Templo de Debod, an ancient Egyptian temple with stunning sunset views over the city.

  • Day 2: Toledo
    1 hour (70 km) by train from Madrid.

    Spend the day exploring the ancient city of Toledo, known for its beautiful architecture, including the famous Alcázar of Toledo. Walk along the winding streets and visit some of the many historical churches and synagogues that dot the city.

  • Day 3-4: Gran Canaria
    2.5 hours (1,386 km) by plane from Madrid.

    Make your way to the Canary Islands to visit Gran Canaria, a beautiful island famous for its beaches and incredible landscapes. Spend the first day relaxing and exploring the beaches, and the second day hiking to the stunning Roque Nublo, a volcanic rock formation that offers breathtaking views of the island.

  • Day 5-6: Tenerife

    Head to the nearby island of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. Spend the first day exploring the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and then spend the second day visiting the Teide National Park, home to Spain's highest point, Mount Teide.

  • Day 7-8: Seville
    2.5 hours (535 km) by train from Tenerife.

    Take a train to the city of Seville, known for its beautiful architecture and rich history. Spend the first day visiting the Real Alcázar of Seville, a stunning medieval palace, and then explore the Cathedral of Seville, one of the largest and most impressive churches in the world. On day 8, visit the beautiful Plaza de España before continuing your exploration of the city.

  • Day 9-10: Madrid
    2.5 hours (532 km) by train from Seville.

    Return to Madrid for the final two days of your trip. Spend the first day visiting some of the city's famous museums, such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía or the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. On the final day, visit the iconic Puerta Del Sol and take in the sights and sounds of the bustling city.

Transportation

When travelling around Spain, the most convenient transportation method is the train. The national railway company, Renfe, operates trains that connect most cities and towns throughout the country. However, if you're travelling to the islands, then the best option would be to take a plane or ferry.

Useful Tips

If you have more time, consider visiting other iconic spots in Madrid, such as the Palacio Real de Madrid or exploring the popular Buen Retiro Park.

If you have less time, consider skipping Toledo, as it requires an additional day of travel.

The main airport in Madrid is Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), which is situated 15km from the city center. It is the largest airport in Spain and it connects to most international destinations. The airport consists of four terminals and offers plenty of amenities including shops, restaurants, cafes, and duty-free stores.
