Varkala Family-Friendly Itinerary - August 2023

  1. Day 1: Varkala Beach
    5 minutes (1.2 km) from Papanasam Beach

    Start your morning with a leisurely stroll along the stunning Varkala Beach. Enjoy the cool sea breeze and watch fishermen casting their nets. Visit the numerous beach shacks and stalls selling snacks and souvenirs. For the afternoon, take a dip in the sea and try out some water sports like parasailing or surfing. As the sun sets, take a walk on the cliff and explore the many cafes, restaurants and shops. Try some freshly caught seafood and enjoy the live music performances.

  2. Day 2: Janardhana Swamy Temple
    10 minutes (3.4 km) from Varkala Beach

    Begin your day with a visit to the famous Janardhana Swamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is surrounded by lush greenery and features stunning architecture. Take a tour of the temple complex and learn about its history and significance. For the afternoon, head over to Kappil Beach and enjoy a picnic with your family. Take a boat ride in the backwaters and witness the breathtaking sunset. As evening sets in, head back to the cliff and enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the many restaurants.

  3. Day 3: Anjengo Fort
    30 minutes (12.3 km) from Janardhana Swamy Temple

    Today, explore the historic Anjengo Fort, built by the British East India Company in the 17th century. The fort offers stunning views of the sea and is surrounded by coconut groves. Take a tour of the fort and learn about its history and significance. For the afternoon, visit the Varkala Aquarium and marvel at the numerous marine species on display.   4. Day 4: Ponnumthuruthu Island
    1 hour 15 minutes (38.4 km) from Anjengo Fort

    On your last day, take a day trip to the beautiful Ponnumthuruthu Island. The island is home to the famous Shiva-Parvathi Temple and is surrounded by lush greenery and backwaters. Take a boat ride to the island and explore its many attractions. For the afternoon, visit the Nature Park and Butterfly Garden and witness the stunning flora and fauna. As the sun sets, head back to Varkala and enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the many restaurants.

Other local attractions worth visiting are the Sivagiri Mutt, a spiritual and cultural centre located on a hilltop, and the Kollam Beach, a picturesque beach with clear blue waters. For side trips, consider visiting the backwaters of Kollam or taking a day trip to the nearby city of Trivandrum. To maximize your fun, make sure to try out some of the local delicacies like appam, dosa and seafood dishes. Don't forget to shop for souvenirs at the many stalls and shops on the cliff.
