Exploring Wayanad in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
30 minutes (12.3 km) from Kalpetta

Located atop Ambukuthi Hills, Edakkal Caves are a must-visit destination for history buffs and nature lovers. The cave paintings and stone carvings here date back to the Neolithic Age, offering a glimpse into the lives of early humans. Spend the morning exploring the caves, admiring the stunning views from the hilltop and learning about the ancient history of the region. In the afternoon, head to the nearby Phantom Rock, a unique rock formation resembling a human skull. End the day with a visit to Soochipara Falls for a refreshing swim in the natural pool.

  2. Day 2: Chembra Peak
1 hour 20 minutes (34.7 km) from Edakkal Caves

Embark on a trek to the highest peak in Wayanad, Chembra, for a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. The trek may take up to 5-6 hours, so start early in the morning. The heart-shaped lake halfway up the mountain adds to the charm of the trek. After the trek, relax and unwind at the nearby Pookode Lake, where you can go boating, nature-walking or even fish-spotting. In the evening, visit the ancient Thirunelli Temple, a pilgrimage site for Hindus, to learn about the history and architectural marvels of the temple.

  3. Day 3: Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
1 hour 10 minutes (29.8 km) from Thirunelli Temple

Explore the rich biodiversity of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary on a jeep safari through the lush green forests. Keep an eye out for tigers, elephants, leopards, and other rare species of flora and fauna. After the safari, spend the afternoon visiting the nearby Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India, and enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding hills. End the day with a visit to the serene Karapuzha Dam, where you can relax and enjoy the calm surroundings.

Recommendations

For adventure enthusiasts, a visit to the Banasura Hill Resort to enjoy ziplining, archery and trekking could be added to the itinerary. Another option is to visit the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a bit further away from Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, but allows visitors to see different species of wildlife. You can also take a day trip to the nearby town of Kozhikode, known for its beaches, museums, and historic forts. Don't forget to try out the local cuisine, especially the spicy biryanis and seafood curries!
