Exploring Pune in October 2023

  1. Day 1: Shaniwar Wada Palace
20 minutes (6.7 km) from Pune Airport

The morning begins with a visit to the historic Shaniwar Wada Palace. Built in 1732, it was once the seat of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire. The impressive ruins of the palace showcase the grandeur of the Maratha era. Afternoon can be spent at the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum (closed on Thursdays), which features a vast collection of Indian artifacts, including traditional clothes, toys, and musical instruments. In the evening, head to the Pataleshwar Cave Temple, carved out of a single rock. The temple dates back to the 8th century and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

  2. Day 2: Aga Khan Palace
30 minutes (8.8 km) from Shaniwar Wada Palace

Begin the day at the iconic Aga Khan Palace (closed on Mondays). The palace served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba during the Indian freedom struggle in the 1940s. Today, the palace is a national monument and a popular tourist destination. In the afternoon, visit the Osho Ashram, a spiritual center founded by the controversial guru Osho. The ashram offers meditation and wellness programs. End the day at the Khadakwasla Dam, a scenic spot for boating and picnicking.

Recommendations

Other attractions worth considering include the Saras Baug Temple, the Mahadji Shinde Chhatri monument, and the Parvati Hill temple. For a side trip, head to Lonavala, a hill station located about an hour and a half from Pune. The town is known for its scenic views, waterfalls, and caves. To maximize your fun, try the local street food, such as vada pav and misal pav. Don't forget to shop for traditional handicrafts at the local bazaars. Have a great trip!
